Job description

Job Summary
General Atomics (GA), and its affiliated companies, is one of the world's leading resources for high-technology systems development ranging from the nuclear fuel cycle to remotely piloted aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless and laser technologies.
General Atomics Inertial Fusion Technology (IFT) division designs, manufactures and characterized first-of-a-kind precision components in support of the national labs, fusion and science technologies. Extensive data packages must be provided to the end users, production processes must be documented, and orders must be tracked in an integrated database. All this data is critical to the national goal of achieving nuclear fusion in a laboratory setting.
We currently have an exciting opportunity for an entry level Data Scientist within our IFT Division located in San Diego, California.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Own the design, development, and maintenance of manufacturing production FileMaker databases supporting multiple teams within the IFT division, including backend data models, user interface layouts, scripts, and system integrations
  • Collaborate with scientists, process engineers, laboratory technicians, and management throughout the software development lifecycle, from requirements gathering and solution design to implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing support
  • Develop and maintain automated data transfer pipelines and integrations with external laboratories, collaborators, and other systems
  • Create and maintain technical documentation and procedures for users
  • Continuously identify opportunities to improve our data ecosystem
  • Collaborate with other developers on additional data science related projects

Job Qualifications
  • Typically requires a bachelor's or master's degree in data science, applied mathematics, statistics, computer science, or related technical/quantitative discipline from an accredited institution. May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education.
  • FileMaker Pro/Server experience (FileMaker certification is a plus)
  • Advanced knowledge of relational database concepts and data engineering concepts
  • Knowledge of AWS
  • Ability to bridge the gap between science experts and software development by translating research workflows and manufacturing needs into database applications
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a cross-functional team
  • Ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical staff
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Ability to learn new technologies and adapt to changing business needs
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.
