What is an Entry Level Data Engineer (Remote)?

An Entry Level Data Engineer (Remote) is a professional who helps build and maintain systems for collecting, storing, and analyzing large sets of data, all while working from a location outside of a traditional office. They typically assist with tasks like setting up data pipelines, cleaning raw data, and supporting data infrastructure. These roles often require basic programming skills in languages such as Python or SQL, familiarity with cloud platforms, and a foundational understanding of databases. Working remotely, they collaborate with teams using digital communication tools to ensure data is accessible and reliable for analysis.

What are some common challenges faced by entry-level data engineers working remotely, and how can they overcome them?

Entry-level data engineers working remotely often face challenges such as limited access to immediate mentorship, difficulties in understanding existing data infrastructure, and coordinating effectively with cross-functional teams. Overcoming these challenges involves proactive communication—regularly checking in with team members and asking for clarification when needed. Utilizing collaborative tools, documenting your work thoroughly, and participating in virtual knowledge-sharing sessions can help you stay connected and continue learning in a remote setting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Data Engineer (Remote), and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Data Engineer (Remote), you need a solid understanding of data structures, SQL, and programming languages like Python or Java, often supported by a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), ETL tools, and version control systems like Git is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with distributed teams. These skills ensure you can efficiently manage data pipelines, maintain data quality, and contribute effectively in a remote work environment.

Job Description:

About the Role & Team

Do you remember seeing trailers for The Devil Wears Prada 2 earlier this summer? What about digital spots for a cruise on the Disney Wish? Or the California Adventure Food and Wine Festival? If you did, it was likely because of the detailed planning and execution of The Walt Disney Company's Enterprise Media and Marketing team...and if you didn't - it's probably because our targeting is that good.

We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join the Performance Marketing arm of this media team. We are an integrated, cross-functional team of marketers, software engineers, data scientists, and analysts who help the Media team execute highly data-driven marketing campaigns and tactics.

As a Staff Software Engineer, you will help expand our technology portfolio of innovative campaign planning tools, complex data science workflows, and elegant web applications that blend the art of advertising with the science of data-backed insights.

This role is unique - our team is embedded directly within the Disney marketing organization. We're aligned, mission-driven, and free to move fast and innovate towards our goals. You'll tackle the challenges of executing and optimizing precise paid media strategies, using the latest technologies and tools. If you're excited about this, please get in touch - we'd love to hear from you!

What You Will Do

  • Drive the development and roadmap execution of the suite of tools used by the Performance Marketing group

  • Own and evolve software engineering, data modeling, and architectural standards within the team; create and uphold standards and rigor around software development, testing, deployment, and documentation

  • Quickly develop a deep understanding of the business of marketing and create new technical solutions or platforms that can accelerate our broader team's velocity and impact

  • Implement full stack applications or author workflows that facilitate the execution of data-driven media campaigns on third party ad platforms

  • Help fellow engineers hurdle roadblocks; create tools that empower scientists and developers to quickly test, iterate, and promote to production

  • Implement quality controls, monitoring, and other safeguards to ensure optimizations are accurately and safely applied to in-flight ad campaigns and key business metrics are always presented accurately

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).

  • 8+ years of experience designing and delivering backend architectures in a production environment, with a strong understanding of design patterns and best practices.

  • Strong opinions on how to best use AI/LLMs in the software development process; ability to quickly discern hype from value in the quickly evolving AI landscape (and an equal ability to put it into practice)

  • Experience developing full-stack applications or backend services, using popular frameworks; knowledge of front-end frameworks like Angular

  • Understanding of cloud compute and modern dev ops practices; experience crafting and owning CI/CD pipelines for applications

  • Experience with data-rich environments and a fluency with SQLand data modeling

  • Ability to make this architecture fit with over marketing priorities and context

  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment with cross-functional teams to translate business needs into reality-based requirements

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working effectively with data science teams

  • Familiarity or experience with front-end web development and UX design

  • Familiarity with Kubernetes and building scalable services

  • Specific experience with our stack: Spark, Python, Angular, Spring Boot, Databricks/AWS, Chart.js

  • Knowledge of media buying and ad platforms including DMPs, Google Ads, Facebook/Instagram, Innovid, LiveRamp and DSPs (Google Display Video, The Trade Desk, Yahoo)

Compensation:
The hiring range for this remote position is $148,300 to $228,600 per year, which factors in various geographic regions. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate's geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors.
