Entry Level Counseling information

What is entry level counseling?

Entry level counseling jobs are positions designed for individuals who are new to the counseling field, often recent graduates or those with limited professional experience. These roles typically involve working under supervision to provide support, guidance, and basic counseling services to clients in settings like schools, community organizations, or healthcare facilities. Entry level counselors may assist with assessments, lead group sessions, and help clients develop coping strategies. These positions help new counselors gain experience, build their skills, and work toward full licensure or certification. Most entry level counseling jobs require at least a bachelor’s degree in a related field, though some may require a master's degree.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level counselor?

To thrive as an Entry Level Counselor, a bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, or a related field and foundational knowledge of counseling theories are typically required. Familiarity with case management software and basic assessment tools is often needed, and some positions may require progress toward professional certifications or licensure. Strong interpersonal skills, active listening, empathy, and cultural sensitivity help counselors build trust and rapport with clients. These skills and qualifications are vital for effectively supporting clients’ mental health and promoting positive outcomes in counseling settings.

What types of support and supervision can entry-level counselors expect during their first year on the job?

Entry-level counselors typically receive regular supervision from experienced licensed professionals, especially during their initial year. This often includes weekly or biweekly meetings to discuss cases, review progress, and develop counseling techniques. New counselors may also participate in team meetings, case conferences, and ongoing training sessions to enhance their skills. This supportive environment helps build confidence, ensures ethical practice, and provides opportunities to learn from more seasoned colleagues.

How do I start a career in counseling?

To start a career in counseling, obtain a relevant bachelor's degree such as psychology, social work, or counseling, followed by a master's degree in counseling or a related field. Gain supervised clinical experience and obtain licensure or certification as required by your state or country, which often involves passing an exam. Developing strong communication and active listening skills is essential for success in this field.

Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Licensed Mental Health Counselor to join Joy of Hope Behavioral Health Center in Arlington, Virginia. This full-time position offers the unique opportunity to provide remote therapeutic services, helping individuals and families navigate their mental health challenges. As a key contributor to our team, you will champion mental wellness by employing clinical expertise to foster resilience and personal growth among clients.

About the Organization

Joy of Hope Behavioral Health Center is a community health clinic that prioritizes comprehensive mental health care and strives to empower individuals through effective therapeutic practices. Our mission is to improve the emotional well-being of our community members by providing tailored mental health services that respect diverse backgrounds and personal experiences. We believe in a holistic approach to mental health that encompasses clinical interventions alongside community support.

Work Environment

This role is entirely remote, allowing for flexibility while maintaining a supportive and collaborative work environment. You will be part of a talented interdisciplinary team composed of licensed professionals including psychiatrists, social workers, and other healthcare experts committed to delivering the highest standards of care. Our clinic emphasizes open communication and teamwork, ensuring that you are well-supported in your practice.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments to identify clients' mental health concerns, formulate accurate clinical diagnoses, and develop effective treatment plans tailored to each client's unique needs.
  • Facilitate individual, group, and family therapy sessions utilizing evidence-based therapeutic modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and mindfulness-based interventions.
  • Provide crisis intervention services to clients facing acute mental health challenges, effectively employing de-escalation techniques to ensure client safety and stability.
  • Maintain meticulous and confidential client records, ensuring compliance with ethical and legal standards for documentation, including detailed treatment plans and progress notes.
  • Collaborate closely with interdisciplinary teams to coordinate comprehensive care, share insights, and enhance treatment outcomes for clients.
  • Educate clients and their families on mental health issues, treatment options, and community resources, and advocate strongly for their rights and needs throughout the therapeutic process.
  • Engage in ongoing education and training to stay abreast of the latest best practices in mental health therapy, ensuring an up-to-date knowledge base that informs client care.
Patient Population / Client Focus

You will work with a diverse clientele, including individuals, couples, families, and groups, representing various backgrounds and experiences. The focus lies on providing culturally competent care that addresses a wide range of mental health concerns—from anxiety and depression to more complex trauma-related issues. Ensuring that each client's unique cultural, social, and emotional context is respected and integrated into the treatment process will be a cornerstone of your practice.

Qualifications
  • Current licensure as a Mental Health Therapist, holding LMFT, LPC, or LCSW credentials.
  • A Master’s or Doctoral degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or a closely related field is required.
  • Proven clinical assessment and diagnostic skills to effectively understand and address clients' mental health challenges.
  • A minimum of two years of related experience in a clinical or counseling setting.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, facilitating effective client engagement and collaboration with team members.
  • Ability to work independently while also contributing positively to the team dynamic.
  • A strong commitment to maintaining the highest ethical standards and professional practices.
Preferred Experience
  • Previous experience within a community health clinic or similar outpatient setting is highly desirable but not mandatory for entry-level positions.
  • Familiarity with telehealth platforms and remote client engagement strategies to enhance service delivery.
Compensation and Benefits

The salary for this role ranges from USD 85,000 to 100,000 annually, with a sign-on bonus offered for qualified candidates. Benefits include a robust health package featuring health, dental, and vision insurance, flexible work schedules, and generous paid time off, inclusive of holidays. Additionally, we support ongoing professional development with resources for continuing education and training.
