Job description

Job Summary:

This entry level/early career professional, applied technology position creates software that is sold as an integral part of Cummins' products. People in these positions have involvement in identification and understanding of stakeholder requirements and developing specifications, and responsibility for design, implementation, testing and/or release of software that controls the operation of Cummins' products in a variety of customer applications.

Key Responsibilities:

Investigates product software problems, understands causal mechanisms, recommends appropriate action, owns problem resolution, and documents results. Applies and supports the improvement of product software development processes and tools. Processes include coding, compiling and test. Tools include code editors, integration tools, static analysis tools, compilers and hardware in the loop test tools. Details specific to this role may be found at the end of this document. Obtains input and collaborates with product and software development teams and delivers verified software features, components, builds to product teams. Uses systems knowledge and expertise to make decisions in the areas of software requirements, architecture, design, and test that impact the quality and performance of software builds, product lines (platforms) and management of cross-BU integration and coordination. Owns problem resolution for moderately complex components, products, systems, subsystems or services with technical complexity and ambiguity increasing as experience is gained in the role. Responsibile for interacting and collaborating with cross-functional teams. Provides independent execution of established work processes and systems, while still developing technology or product knowledge; engages with the improvement of systems and processes. Involves minimal direct management of people, but could involve the coordination and direction of work amongst technicians and/or temporary student employees. Contributes effectively toward team goals, exhibits influence within a work group and continues to develop proficiency in the competency areas critical to success in the role.Cummins is an equal opportunity employer.   1. Lead Connectivity Feature Development
    Own the systems engineering activities for connected vehicle features and products, including stakeholder requirement analysis, system requirements development, requirements decomposition, interface definition, and technical profile creation to enable successful delivery of connectivity capabilities.
  2. Drive Cross-Functional Technical Alignment
    Collaborate with software, cloud, validation, product management, and architecture teams to ensure requirements, designs, interfaces, verification plans, and delivery timelines remain aligned throughout the product lifecycle.
  3. Support Verification, Validation, and Product Launch
    Develop verification strategies, support DVP&R creation, resolve technical issues, and ensure connectivity features meet functional, performance, and quality expectations prior to release.

Required Skills, Education, and Experience

  1. Systems Engineering Expertise- Experience developing and managing stakeholder, system, and subsystem requirements.
    Knowledge of requirements traceability, systems integration, interface management, and verification & validation processes.
  2. Connected Product Development Experience- Experience working with embedded software, cloud-connected systems, telematics, IoT, vehicle electronics, or similar connected product technologies.
    Understanding of end-to-end system interactions across hardware, software, cloud, and user-facing applications.

Exempt Entry Level: Designed for external candidates within 2 years of completing their highest level of degree (Bachelor, Master, PhD, MBA, or JD) from an accredited U.S. college/university, and currently reside within the continental U.S.

International Student Eligibility (U.S. based roles): F-1 visa students must have approved Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Occupational Practical Training (OPT) before their Early Career assignment begin. CPT/OPT must relate to their degree and be authorized by their university. Students are responsible for securing this approval through their school's international office.

Product Software Design and Construction - Constructs product software using industry best practices and robust software engineering principles; verifies software updates to ensure quality products.
Product Verification and Validation Management - Develops product systems validation plans from a variety of inputs to identify failure modes, while managing product risk and relative priority; negotiates product requirements against capability to guide project scope; evaluates analytical, simulation and physical test results to verify product capability and validate requirements; assesses legacy versus proposed system solution capabilities and produces recommendations with technical documentation to support product decisions.
