WORK LOCATION: San Luis Obispo, CA
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
SALARY RANGE: The anticipated salary range for this role is $97,000.00 to $120,000.00 annually. This range reflects a good faith estimate based on the targeted level for the role and typical compensation benchmarks across U.S. locations. Actual compensation may vary depending on the selected candidate’s qualifications, experience, geographical location, and internal alignment. 
 
SUMMARY
The Associate Aero-Mechanical Engineer supports the design, development, and testing of mechanical systems and components for uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS). This role focuses on applying engineering fundamentals to real-world aerospace applications while learning advanced mechanical design principles, materials, and manufacturing processes. Under the guidance of senior engineers, this position contributes to concept design, CAD modeling, documentation, and prototype builds for airframes, subsystems, and mechanical assemblies.  
 
This is an entry-level engineering position designed to develop core aerospace design and integration skills in a collaborative, fast-paced environment supporting multi-disciplinary teams. 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
The following job functions are a basic requirement but are not limited to and may be assigned other duties. 
  • Assist in the design, modeling, and drafting of mechanical and structural components for UAS. 
  • Support system integration and prototype builds, collaborating closely with engineers, technicians, and production staff. 
  • Create and maintain engineering drawings, specifications, and supporting documentation in accordance with company standards. 
  • Conduct basic tolerance analysis, materials selection, and fit checks under senior engineer supervision. 
  • Participate in design reviews, applying feedback to improve manufacturability and performance. 
  • Contribute to test setup, data collection, and analysis for mechanical validation efforts. 
  • Ensure designs align with safety, reliability, and compliance standards. 
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams (software, electrical, test) to ensure seamless mechanical integration. 
 
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field required. 
  • 0–2 years of relevant engineering experience (internship or co-op experience preferred). 
  • Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks or equivalent). 
  • Familiarity with GD&T, mechanical drafting, and drawing standards. 
  • Basic understanding of structural design, materials, and manufacturing processes (composites, machined parts, or sheet metal). 
  • Exposure to mechanical testing or prototype fabrication is a plus. 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. 
  • Attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work. 
  • Collaborative mindset with effective communication skills. 
  • Eagerness to learn and contribute in a multi-disciplinary environment. 
  • Ability to manage time and adapt to shifting priorities in a fast-paced setting.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The work environment may involve a standard office setting while also incorporating elements of a production area. Employees will use standard office equipment, including computers, and must demonstrate stamina to sit or stand while maintaining attention to detail despite potential interruptions. The role may require occasional activities such as walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, and bending. Vision is necessary for reading printed materials and a computer screen, while hearing and speech are essential for effective communication both in person and over the telephone. Additionally, the position may necessitate travel by air or automobile. Employees may be required to use personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coats, to ensure safety in the production environment. Employees may be able to lift up to 30 pounds as needed.
