Description
The Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) is seeking to hire a student assistant to learn and assist with fiscal/business services functions. This position is ideal for candidates interested in gaining an understanding of business operations; law office experience; exposure to state government; and developing skills applicable to an entry-level career.

Employment
This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.
Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check: educational verification (degree, license, or official transcript) or DMV clearance. Applicants will be required to pass required pre-employment checks to the satisfaction of University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) and the hiring Agency or Department.
UEI does not allow students to hold more than one UEI Job at a time, or work in more than one account per pay period. UEI employees who are considering leaving their current UEI student assistant position for a different UEI student assistant position should inform their supervisor in writing and provide at least a week's notice.
UEI is not a multi-state employer. UEI only employs candidates who live and work in the state of California. If selected for the position you must reside in California and all work must be performed in the state of California.
Prerequisites
Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring and Winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list. Students must be enrolled in at least: six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.
Students declared major must match the major(s) listed in the job posting.
Majors/Fields of Study
Accounting/ Finance, Business/Business Administration (all concentrations), Communication Studies, Criminal Justice, Economics, English/Journalism, Liberal Studies, Government, History, Journalism, Law, Management, Marketing, Mathematics/Statistics, Public Policy & Administration, Related computer technology or computer engineering fields of study, Sociology, or Social Sciences.
Work Schedule
Flexible workdays and work hours, Monday - Friday, between 8 AM - 5 PM. The final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.
Additional Work Schedule
Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday - Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).
Compensation
$17.00 - $20.00 per hour.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum 2.95 grade point average.
- Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term.
- Experience with Microsoft Office - Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
- Ability to learn new applications/software systems effectively and efficiently.
- Knowledge of financial analysis and reporting methodologies.
- Knowledge of basic accounting principles, including generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
- Ability to process requests consistently with high level of accuracy.
- Ability to prioritize problems and promptly resolve or escalate when necessary.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work with and collaborate with peers and other staff as needed.
- Ability to provide excellent customer service to internal staff and external constituents.
- Strong time management skills and ability to manage individual assignments and complete duties within tight deadlines.
- Ability to independently complete tasks with minimal supervision.
- Requires the ability to work with and maintain confidential information.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior office experience is preferred.
- Prior experience working on budgeting or financial reporting projects is ideal.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Handle, deliver, and assist with critical legal documents and briefs.
- Greet and direct constituents attending PERB functions.
- Special projects applicable to coursework and career interests.
- Assist with inventory, file management, correspondence, courier services, assist with rearranging office space (as needed), and other tasks with increasing complexity depending on availability.
- Utilize Excel to track pertinent data.
- Develop and maintain reports and logs using Excel.
- Research and develop internal processes, forms, and reports to contribute towards operational improvement.
- Develop and apply skills in all areas of fiscal operations such as accounts payable, travel expense claims, receivables, accounting reports, budget development, budget projections and reconciliation.
- Work with program and project managers on fiscal related projects.
- Other essential administrative functions.
Physical Requirements
Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, scanners, shredders, and fax machines; use of basic tools and ability to lift/move up to 40 lbs. with or without a reasonable accommodation.
