Job description


The primary function of the Police Communication Specialist is to perform duties in an emergency communications center on a specific shift.
Duties and Responsibilities
45% Dispatch
  • Operate and utilize the in-house computer system, 911, and Security Network computer systems by rapidly and accurately making complete entries into these systems

  • Monitor alarm and warning systems involving audio and visual alarm indicators to include intrusion, fire, and the National Weather Service and Civil Defense warnings

  • Route emergency response units to proper locations and disseminate emergency information to proper personnel

  • Operate a radio base station, transmitting and receiving messages with emergency services personnel and agencies in accordance with FCC regulations and following established procedures

  • Monitor and comprehend the content of simultaneous, multiple voice transmissions while monitoring multiple radio frequencies to include University Police frequencies; Pittsburg Police, Pittsburg Fire, Crawford County Sheriff, Crawford County ambulance, and be able to identify frequencies by observing multi-colored light indicators on the radio console or hearing and distinguishing voices and/or tones

  • Transmit and relay information to responding units and shift supervisors in an accurate and concise manner

  • Log pertinent information and monitor the status and locations of on-duty units

20% Monitor the Emergency 911 system and respond to calls
  • Answer telephones, including phones consisting of business lines, University enhanced 911 and direct emergency lines

  • Use proper communication techniques in answering inquiries; dealing with complaints prioritizing importance; and calming excited or verbally abusive callers

  • Communicate with other area agencies to include police, fire and ambulance, as needed

  • Make telephone notifications to personnel and administrators as appropriate or requested to relay pertinent information

  • Log phone calls as required

15% Data entry and NCIC
  • Operate a highly technical data transmission and retrieval computer system by properly using a data entry terminal to send, relay, and receive information from other criminal justice agencies

  • Apply appropriate computer codes, formats and policies

  • Maintain certification in NCIC computer usage by passing the NCIC test given by the Kansas Control Point with a minimum score of 85%

  • Provide general information as requested by emergency service responders, administrators, and the general public

15% Daily Interactions
  • Maintain individual equipment in accordance with departmental regulations

  • Manage the total communications operations which will frequently involve multi-tasking such as answering/prioritizing multiple phone calls, making rapid, independent dispatch decisions based on appropriate rules, regulations, policies, and procedures

  • Interact with departmental personnel, other emergency agencies, and the University community to establish and maintain effective working relationships

5% Training and Other Duties as Assigned
  • Participate in training as directed by supervisor and/or the department

  • Make supervisor aware of areas in which training or instruction would be helpful

  • Perform related job duties as required

  • Work on special/emergency assignments as directed, which may involve being called in to work or being held past the normal shift schedule with little or no advance notice

  • Work extended hours without an opportunity for relief, when working at major University events, and/or disaster sites

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • One year of related experience
