JOB DESCRIPTION

Auto Technician I

Grade Level: Entry Level/Apprentice Grade 5

Reports To: Auto Technician II & Maintenance Supervisor

Department: Transportation

Positions Supervised: None


SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Auto Technician II & Maintenance Supervisor, the Auto Technician I assists with the inspection, maintenance, and repair of Work Training Center vehicles, equipment, as well as supporting broader fleet operations for both internal and community-based vehicles as WTC expands its maintenance services to the public. This entry-level position is designed for individuals beginning a career in automotive or diesel mechanics, including students currently enrolled in an automotive technology program or recent graduates.

The Auto Technician I will receive on-the-job training while learning preventive maintenance procedures, vehicle inspections, and basic repair techniques. This position provides opportunities to develop technical skills while working alongside experienced maintenance staff & while using the company provided tools.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• All tools provided by the company.

• Assist experienced mechanics with preventive maintenance and vehicle repairs.

• Perform routine internal & external vehicle servicing including but not limited to:

  • Oil and filter changes
  • Tire inspections and rotations
  • Fluid level checks
  • Battery testing
  • Replacing lights, wiper blades, and other basic components .

• Conduct basic vehicle safety inspections under supervision.

• Learn to identify maintenance concerns and report findings to the direct Supervisors.

• Maintain clean, accurate service records and maintenance documentation.

• Safely use hand tools, shop equipment, and diagnostic equipment after appropriate training.

• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area.

• Follow all Work Training Center safety policies and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

• Assist with preparing vehicles for inspections and preventative maintenance schedules.

• Learn proper environmental practices for disposal of oil, fluids, tires, batteries, and other waste materials.

• Demonstrate professionalism and courteous communication with coworkers and agency staff.

• Attend required safety meetings and participate in ongoing training opportunities.

• Promptly report equipment concerns, safety hazards, or unusual maintenance issues to the Maintenance Supervisor.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

• Assist with basic building and facility maintenance projects as assigned.

• Perform shop cleaning and organization duties.

• Participate in special projects as assigned.

• Perform other related duties as requested by the Auto Technician II, Maintenance Supervisor, Chief Operations Officer, or Executive Director.

1. Employee is regularly required to stand; walk; bend; lift; climb or balance; use hands; reach with hands and arms; and see and communicate with sufficient acuity to successfully perform all aspects of the job.

2. Employee may be required to work outside in an environment that includes inclement weather, loud noises, fumes, and extreme heat and/or cold.

3. Employee must be able to demonstrate manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and perform simple grasping of hand tools and small parts. Reasonable accommodations will be provided as needed.

4. Ability to safely lift and/or carry 50 pounds with assistance available for heavier objects.

5. Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, goggles, etc.

6. Ability to drive varied distances daily.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to successfully perform this job.

• High school diploma, GED, or currently enrolled in a high school, community college, trade school, or vocational automotive program.

• Must be at least 18 years of age.

• Interest in pursuing a career in automotive, diesel, or fleet maintenance.

• Basic understanding of automotive tools and vehicle systems.

• Ability to learn new mechanical skills through hands-on instruction.

• Strong attendance, dependability, and willingness to learn.

• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

• Good organizational skills and attention to detail.

• Ability to work cooperatively with supervisors and coworkers.

• Ability to interact respectfully with individuals with disabilities.

• Basic computer skills or willingness to learn electronic work order systems.

• Must possess a valid California Driver’s License and maintain a clear DMV driving record to be insurable by Work Training Center’s insurance carrier.

• A fingerprint clearance from the Department of Justice on file as a condition of continued employment.

• Must meet Department of Transportation physical and medical requirements and pass substance abuse screening as a safety sensitive employee. This position would be subject to random substance abuse screenings.

• Commitment to the Work Training Center and its mission and the ability to work as a team member and represent the Transportation Department in a professional manner.

• Ability and willingness to work overtime and adjusted workweek to include weekend schedules, as needed or required.

• Adherence of established company dress standards and willingness to wear issued uniform and appropriate safety protective equipment.


QUALIFICATIONS PREFERED OR WILLING TO ACQUIRE:

• Currently enrolled in or recently completed an Automotive Technology Program.

• Completion of introductory automotive coursework.

• ASE Student Certification or willingness to pursue ASE certification.

• Experience performing basic vehicle maintenance such as oil changes, brake work, tire rotations, or similar tasks.

• Previous experience working with hand and power tools.

• Previous internship, volunteer, or part-time experience in an automotive shop.

• CPR and First Aid certification or willingness to obtain.

• Experience working with individuals with disabilities is a plus.

• Commercial (Class B) California’s Driver’s License with passenger endorsement.

o Minimum of 18-passenger vehicle endorsement within the first six months of employment.

• It is recommended that staff be tested and inoculated for Hepatitis B.
