JOB ANNOUNCEMENTRancho California Water District invites you to apply for an Intern position! A student intern position is available in Maintenance and Operations Division. We are committed to hiring students, currently enrolled in an accredited college, and who are interested in a career with a public utility.
This is a temporary position to work no more than 900 hours per fiscal year, and no more than 29 hours in a seven-day period. Students who are interested in the water industry, like to be busy outdoors, and have an interest working in a government entity should apply.

JOB DESCRIPTIONUnder immediate supervision, to perform a variety of water utility related duties and provide experience within the department. This position is intended to give college students a variety of projects to gain experience to support a career in the water sector.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICSThis is a temporary entry-level position for a college student intern to work no more than 900 hours per fiscal year, and no more than 29 hours in a seven-day period. Positions assigned to this level may perform updates to the district's valve mapping program, participate in valve maintenance, and assist in department projects under close supervision.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIESDuties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Support department in special projects as needed.
- Assist staff with repairing water mains, water services, hydrants, valves, air-vacs, meters, and related appurtenances.
- Update and create new digital map pages using AutoCad or similar.
- Verify discrepancies of information in GIS and the field.
- Organize all field valve tie map pages.
- Understand, update and transfer needed information from record drawings.
- Provide "redlines" to Engineering.
- Conduct field inspections and assist in capturing asset related data.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of:
- Basic mechanical principles.
- Proper work safety standards.
- AutoCad software, Excel, Word.
- GIS, ArcMap.
Ability to:
- Operate a variety of hand and power tools.
- Operate a two-way radio.
- Read, understand, and comply with District safety policies and procedures.
- Follow written and verbal instructions and work effectively with other crew members.
- Comply with the District's Safety, Health and Environmental policies.
- Present a professional image and communicate effectively with others, including the public.
- Operate a motor vehicle.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONSThe essential functions of this position may require the employee to perform the following physical activities:
- Operate District vehicle in field installations, Field Services and operations maintenance.
- Carry, push, reach and lift equipment and parts weighing up to 60 lbs.
- Stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and climb during field maintenance and repair work.
- Stand and walk for extended periods.
- Heavy exertion of energy.
- Hearing and vision within normal ranges.
- Communicate verbally with District staff in face-to-face, one-to-one settings.
- Regularly use a telephone or radio for communication.
- Sit for long periods of time in front of a computer screen entering data.
Student interns are not eligible for benefits, except those required by law.
