GEI is seeking an AI Engineer Intern/Co-op to support the growth of GEI’s AI Center of Excellence (AI CoE) and broader digital transformation initiatives across GEI.
 
This role is designed for students interested in applied artificial intelligence, automation, and enterprise AI adoption. The AI Engineer Intern/Co-op will support lightweight AI engineering, workflow automation, AI enablement, and operational support activities that help scale AI capabilities across the organization.
 
Working alongside GEI’s AI engineering and digital solutions teams, this role will help support AI-enabled workflows, reusable tools, prompt-based solutions, and internal operational initiatives leveraging modern AI platforms and copilots.
 
This position offers hands-on exposure to real-world enterprise AI implementation within the engineering, environmental and infrastructure industry, including AI-enabled operational workflows, automation, and next-generation digital delivery.
 
The role is intentionally structured with flexible year-round scheduling to support academic commitments while providing students meaningful applied AI engineering experience.
 
Essential Responsibilities & Duties
  • Support development and testing of lightweight AI-enabled workflows, automations, and applications.
  • Assist with prompt engineering, prompt workflow development, reusable prompt libraries, and AI-assisted operational processes.
  • Support AI CoE initiatives related to AI agents, and workflow automation.
  • Assist with development and testing of integrations using APIs and lightweight Python scripting.
  • Support AI-enabled operational initiatives, reusable assets, templates, and documentation.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and support for AI-enabled solutions and workflows.
  • Support research and experimentation with emerging AI tools, and AI-assisted development workflows.
  • Collaborate with AI engineers, full stack engineers, digital advisors, and regional digital strategy leaders on applied AI initiatives.
  • Contribute to internal enablement activities that help scale AI adoption across GEI. 
Minimum Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Machine Intelligence, Data Science, or a related field.
  • Preferred candidates will have completed at least 2 years of undergraduate study.
  • Interest in Generative AI, automation, AI-assisted software development, or workflow automation.
  • Basic understanding of Python or similar scripting/programming languages.
  • Familiarity or exposure to modern AI platforms and copilots such as Microsoft Copilot, Copilot Studio, Copilot Agent Builder, OpenAI ChatGPT/Codex, Claude, or Claude Code.
  • Familiarity with APIs, prompt engineering concepts, or AI-assisted workflows is considered an asset.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to learn quickly and work in a fast-moving technology environment.
  • Experience with software development projects, hackathons, research projects, GitHub portfolios, or student design teams is considered an asset.

Work Structure & Flexibility
  • Hybrid work arrangement available.
  • This role is designed to support academic schedules with flexible part-time hours during academic terms and opportunities for increased hours during summer and semester breaks based on project demand.
  • Typical availability may range from approximately 10–20 hours per week during academic terms and up to 40 hours per week during summer and scheduled breaks.
