Role Description:

The Cost Accountant will be a key member of the finance team, reporting directly to the Vice President of Finance/Controller. With integrity as the highest priority, this position supports the division's financial operations by maintaining accurate job cost records, assisting with monthly close, and providing data to support budgeting, forecasting, and reporting. This is an entry-level to early-career opportunity for someone looking to build a strong foundation in construction, homebuilding, or real estate accounting while working closely with senior finance leadership.


Specific Job Duties:

JOB COST ACCOUNTING

  • Assist in maintaining accurate job cost records for active projects, ensuring costs are coded to the correct project and cost category.
  • Review and process vendor invoices and purchase orders for accuracy against budgets and contracts.
  • Support month-end close by preparing job cost reconciliations and standard journal entries under the guidance of the VP of Finance.
  • Help track committed costs, change orders, and budget variances, flagging discrepancies for review.
  • Assist with maintaining accurate cost coding structures within the accounting system.


REPORTING & ANALYSIS

  • Prepare routine job cost reports and budget-to-actual comparisons for review by the VP of Finance.
  • Assist in compiling supporting data for monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting.
  • Help gather and organize data used in the annual budgeting and forecasting process.
  • Respond to ad hoc data requests from the VP of Finance and other department leaders.
  • Support the reconciliation of subcontractor and vendor accounts.


OPERATIONS & SUPPORT

  • Work closely with the Purchasing and Construction teams to ensure costs are properly documented and approved.
  • Assist with maintaining organized, audit-ready documentation for all job cost files.
  • Help ensure compliance with internal controls and established accounting procedures.
  • Support the VP of Finance with special projects and process improvement initiatives as needed.
  • Participate in monthly budget meetings, taking notes and following up on action items as directed.


Position Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field

Experience:

  • 1-3 years of experience in accounting, cost accounting, or financial analysis
  • Prior internship, construction, homebuilding, or real estate experience a plus
  • Public accounting experience a plus

Skills:

  • Proficient in Excel, including formulas, pivot tables, and basic financial modeling
  • Familiarity with accounting or ERP software; experience with data analytics, AI analysis is beneficial
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Eager to learn, with solid analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment

Base Salary:

The expected base salary range for this position is between $65,000 to $85,000 per year, depending on experience and skillset. Additionally, this position is eligible for an annual bonus based on divisional and individual performance.
