What does an entry level climate data analyst do?

An Entry Level Climate Data Analyst is responsible for collecting, processing, and analyzing climate-related data, such as temperature, precipitation, and atmospheric conditions. They use statistical tools and software to identify trends and patterns in climate data, often assisting senior analysts or scientists in research projects. Their work helps support climate research, environmental policy development, and sustainability initiatives. Typically, they prepare reports, visualize data, and ensure data quality while gaining experience in the field.

What are some typical projects or data sets an entry level climate data analyst might work with during their first year?

As an Entry Level Climate Data Analyst, you'll likely work with a variety of environmental data sources, such as temperature records, precipitation data, greenhouse gas emission inventories, or satellite imagery. Early projects often involve cleaning, organizing, and performing basic statistical analysis on these large data sets to support more senior analysts and research teams. You might also assist with generating reports, creating data visualizations, and ensuring data quality. Collaboration with scientists, engineers, and policy experts is common, giving you exposure to interdisciplinary teamwork and opportunities to learn from experienced colleagues.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level climate data analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Climate Data Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, a background in environmental science or statistics, and proficiency in data interpretation, often supported by a relevant bachelor's degree. Familiarity with data analysis tools like Python, R, Excel, and GIS software, as well as experience with climate datasets, is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help distinguish candidates in this role. These skills are critical for accurately analyzing climate trends, supporting research, and contributing valuable insights to environmental decision-making.

What is the difference between Entry Level Climate Data Analyst vs Entry Level Environmental Data Analyst?

Job description

Data Analyst

Status: Full Time

Location: Moriarty, NM

Reports To: Chief of Technology

Who Are We:

Sceye is a high-growth technology company, building the next generation of instant communications, imaging and remote sensing infrastructure through stratospheric platforms.

Our lighter-than-air high-altitude platform systems (LTA HAPS) are capable of maintaining position over an operational area in the stratosphere (altitudes of 18–21km). They can carry multiple telecommunications, imaging and remote sensing payloads, providing unique functionality, cost, environmental and societal advantages.

Our HAPS can be deployed in a matter of days and at a fraction of the cost of traditional infrastructure solutions. This makes them an ideal solution for providing telecommunications connectivity, emergency solutions in the event of natural or other disasters, environmental and infrastructure monitoring, Earth observation and a range of defense applications.

Our customers & partners include some of the largest global telecommunications companies, infrastructure operators, climate researchers, civil and defense agencies.

At Sceye, we aim high, and we want you to join us at the stratospheric edge of innovation. As part of our mission-driven team, you'll contribute to building breakthrough technologies that are changing the way we connect and observe the world. We are looking for individuals who bring not only deep expertise but also bold vision and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

Position Summary:

Sceye is seeking a detail-oriented Data Analyst to support flight test, engineering, and business teams with data-driven insights. This role will work with telemetry, sensor, and operational data generated by our stratospheric platforms, helping teams make informed decisions on vehicle performance, mission readiness, and business operations.

What You’ll Do:

  • Collect, clean, and analyze telemetry and sensor data from flight tests and ground operations.
  • Build dashboards and reports to track vehicle performance, mission metrics, and operational KPIs.
  • Partner with Flight Test, Systems Engineering, and Avionics teams to answer data-driven questions about vehicle performance.
  • Support post-flight data reduction and analysis to inform engineering decisions.
  • Maintain and improve data pipelines that move telemetry and operational data into analysis-ready formats.
  • Perform statistical analysis to identify trends, anomalies, and areas for improvement.
  • Document data definitions, sources, and analysis methodology for internal use.
  • Collaborate with software engineering teams to improve data quality and availability.
  • Support business and operations teams with ad hoc reporting and analysis requests.
  • Present findings clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What We're Looking For:

  • Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 2-4 years of experience in a data analyst or similar analytical role.
  • Proficiency in SQL and at least one analysis/scripting language such as Python or R.
  • Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, or similar).
  • Strong understanding of statistics and data quality principles.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to work with large, messy datasets.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain analysis to non-technical audiences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with time-series or telemetry data, especially from sensors or flight/test systems.
  • Familiarity with aerospace, engineering, or manufacturing data environments.
  • Experience with data pipeline or ETL tools.
  • Exposure to machine learning or predictive analytics techniques.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset with curiosity about the underlying data.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple analysis requests in a fast-paced environment.
  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfortable working with engineers, operators, and business stakeholders alike.
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to data accuracy and integrity.

Physical Requirements:

  • Primarily an office-based role involving extended periods at a computer workstation.
  • Occasional visits to hangar or production facilities to understand data sources.
  • Ability to walk throughout office and production facilities as needed.

What We Offer:

At Sceye, we're building more than high-altitude platforms—we're building a workplace where people (and their pups) thrive. Here's what you'll enjoy:

  • Chef-Prepared Lunches – Fresh, onsite meals to keep you fueled and focused.
  • Snacks & Refreshments – Enjoy a variety of snacks and drinks available throughout the day.
  • Wellness Perks – Access to a gym, pickleball court, and an outdoor dog kennel.
