Entry Level Civil Rights Paralegal Jobs in Boulder, CO

The Role

We are hiring an experienced, organized, and exceptionally detail-oriented litigation paralegal to serve as the litigation-management backbone of the practice. This person will work across all active federal and state cases, supporting four attorneys in a fast-paced civil rights and accountability litigation environment.

This role combines the full range of senior paralegal functions with legal-secretary responsibilities. The person we hire will own the firm's docketing and calendar system, manage case files and discovery records, handle government and medical records requests, support document drafting and quality control, and ensure the administrative infrastructure of the practice runs without friction. This is not an entry-level position. We are hiring someone who has done this work before, does it exceptionally well, and takes genuine pride in it.

On a given day, the work may include:

• Maintaining the firm's litigation calendar, docketing court deadlines, and calculating and tracking FRCP and CRCP deadline sequences across multiple active cases
• Coordinating court filings via CM/ECF in the District of Colorado and via the Colorado Courts E-Filing system in state court, including review for filing requirements before submission
• Managing, organizing, and maintaining case files, discovery productions, and litigation records in a consistent, attorney-accessible format
• Submitting, tracking, and organizing government records requests under CORA, the CCJRA, and LEIA, including body camera video requests, police report requests, and personnel file requests
• Requesting, organizing, and managing medical records, billing records, and related health documentation in personal injury and excessive-force cases
• Copy-editing attorney-drafted briefs, motions, letters, and correspondence for grammar, punctuation, formatting, and citation accuracy
• Cite-checking record references in briefs and motions against transcripts, depositions, exhibits, and other underlying documents
• Building and maintaining discovery indexes, exhibit lists, Bates-stamp logs, production tracking charts, and case chronologies
• Preparing subpoenas and coordinating with process servers, court reporters, and expert witnesses
• Scheduling depositions, hearings, mediations, and client meetings; coordinating with opposing counsel and court clerks on scheduling matters
• Drafting correspondence, discovery requests, and standard litigation documents under attorney supervision
• Supporting trial preparation by organizing exhibit binders, preparing witness files, and managing logistical details for hearings and trial
• Communicating with clients with professionalism, warmth, and sensitivity to the difficult circumstances that bring people to a civil rights firm

Required Qualifications

• At least three years of civil litigation paralegal or legal-secretary experience supporting multiple attorneys in a law firm, court, or equivalent setting. We are looking for someone who knows the routines, practices, and workflows and can bring that experience to support our attorneys.
• Proficiency with CM/ECF e-filing in federal court. Experience with Colorado state court..
• Demonstrated ability to manage litigation calendars, calculate and docket court deadlines, and maintain docketing accuracy across multiple active cases.
• Demonstrated ability to organize, index, and manage large volumes of litigation documents, discovery productions, and case records.
• Strong copy-editing and proofreading skills—the ability to review a legal document for grammar, punctuation, citation format, and cross-reference accuracy with precision.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills. The ability to correspond professionally with courts, opposing counsel, clients, and service providers.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook at a high level. Google workspace a plus.
• The judgment and professionalism to handle sensitive client information, privileged communications, and confidential case materials with appropriate discretion and care.
• Ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines without close supervision, and maintain organized work product under pressure.
• A genuine commitment to plaintiff-side civil rights and accountability work.

Strongly Preferred Qualifications

• Significant experience at a plaintiff-side civil litigation firm, with preference for civil rights, police misconduct, employment discrimination, or personal injury work.
• Experience submitting and tracking government records requests under Colorado open- records law (CORA), the Colorado Criminal Justice Records Act (CCJRA), and the Law Enforcement Integrity Act (LEIA).
• Experience requesting, organizing, and managing medical records and billing records in personal injury or civil rights cases.
• Experience managing discovery productions, preparing privilege logs, and coordinating document review in civil litigation.
• Experience in a small-firm environment where each team member handles a broad range of tasks across multiple simultaneous cases.
• Familiarity with 42 U.S.C. § 1983 litigation, excessive-force claims, and the mechanics of police-misconduct cases.
• Experience preparing trial exhibits, exhibit binders, witness files, and courtroom logistics for civil jury trials.
• NALA Certified Paralegal (CP) credential or equivalent professional certification.
• Experience with case management software and litigation support platforms.
• Experience assisting with deposition logistics, including scheduling, exhibit preparation, and transcript management.

The Firm

The Civil Rights Litigation Group is a small plaintiff-side civil rights firm in Denver, Colorado. We litigate police misconduct, jail and prison abuse, employment discrimination, First Amendment retaliation, and anti-SLAPP defense cases for people sued for exercising their free speech rights against government and corporate defendants. We use constitutional claims, civil rights statutes, and tort law to hold government employees and corporations accountable when they abuse their power. Our work is cause-driven, technically demanding, and meaningful.

We have four attorneys. We are hiring our first dedicated senior paralegal to build out the litigation-support infrastructure the practice needs to operate at the level our clients deserve.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary: $50,000 to $70,000 per year, depending on experience and demonstrated litigation-

support ability. Pay is reviewed annually.

Performance bonus: potential for EOY bonus, based on individual performance. The bonus

is earned, not automatic, and can be significant. It is discretionary based on partner review.

The bar for a meaningful bonus is high. A paralegal who meets most but not all of the firm’s

performance standards should not expect significant bonus compensation. A paralegal who

meets all of the firm’s standards and exceeds most of them—who maintains a flawless

docketing record, produces copy-edited documents that require minimal attorney

correction, keeps case files organized and current without prompting, and demonstrates

genuine investment in the practice—will be considered for the maximum bonus. The bonus

is reviewed annually.

Health insurance: Monthly reimbursement toward individual health-insurance premiums.

Transportation/parking: Monthly reimbursement for downtown Denver parking or an RTD pass.

Time off: Paid sick leave consistent with Colorado law. Paid vacation and flexible time off; vacation accrues during the first nine months.

Professional development: NALA or equivalent certification costs, mandatory CLE

attendance costs for paralegals, and relevant professional association membership paid by

the firm.

Office: Downtown Denver office shared with several other plaintiff-side civil rights firms, which means real day-to-day collegiality with like-minded attorneys and staff.

Team environment: Direct collaboration with four attorneys in a small, mission-driven firm.
