The Bureau of Consumer Credit Protection within the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation has an excellent opportunity for a motivated staff attorney to join their team. The Bureau oversees many aspects of the consumer finance industry, including non-bank mortgage lenders, debt collectors, loan brokers, retail creditors, money transmitters, credit reporting agencies and non-bank ATMs. The Staff Attorney will play a critical role in protecting consumers by holding the non-bank lending industries accountable when violations are found.
While no two days look the same, on a typical day you may:
Prepare opening statements, submit evidence, examine and cross-examine witnesses, and prepare closing statements for Administrative Hearings.
Collaborate with other state regulators and organizations such as the Consumer Protection Financial Bureau on matters of national concern.
Draft complaints and partner with outside counsel to pursue violators in court proceedings, including, but not limited to unlicensed practice cases.
Train staff to perform investigations.
Maintain a complete administrative record for each matter that is noticed for hearing.
Review the Bureau's consumer complaint files and examination reports and make decisions oninitiating investigations and pursuing administrative remedies.
Attend trainings and conferences related to mortgage and money transmission businesses.
Draft administrative consent orders and Notices of Administrative Hearing.

MINIMUMQUALIFICATIONS:(Entry level knowledges, skills, and/or abilities may be acquired through,BUTARENOTLIMITEDTOthe following coursework/training and/or experience).
Law Degree from an accredited law school and two (2) years experience in legal practice.
LICENSING/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATIONREQUIREMENTS:(These must be met by all employees prior to attaining permanent status in this class).
Admitted to practice law in Maine and currently registered with the Maine Board of Overseers of the Bar.
Preference will be given to candidates with litigation experience including affirmative litigation. Preferred candidates will also have familiarity with the Maine Administrative Procedures Act.
