Job description

Duties Description This is an entry level opportunity where the individual will learn from experienced employees to help prepare for advancement in the trades field. Incumbent will assist skilled and semiskilled trades positions by performing duties involving the use of elementary skills of the mechanical, building, motor equipment and electrical trades. Incumbent may occasionally operate motor vehicles and power-driven equipment.

JOB FUNCTIONS Essential Functions: Carries and holds construction materials and tools Threads and connects pipe as directed Assists skilled trades' persons when needed Unplugs stoppages Nails, tightens bolts, drives screws, fishes cable and other manual tasks as directed Replaces bulbs, fuses and switches Reviews the Work order system daily and provides appropriate feedback Performs snow removal tasks as assigned Performs routine and emergency tasks involving scheduled/unscheduled overtime Removes asbestos during projects and facilitates repairs Handles various types of hazardous materials such as: asbestos, refrigerants, gas, fuel oil, solvents, and more. Works in confined space situations using personal protective equipment Uses/wears personal protective equipment when necessary Clean shop and clean up after repair work Required training on Building automation system BAS Paints heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) equipment and related areas Job Requirements: Has knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the trade or trades to which assigned. Possesses knowledge of safety standards and procedures.

Performs moderate to heavy manual labor. Understands and carries out written and oral instructions. Can climb ladders and work at heights on scaffolds and platforms.

Uses the tools, machines, equipment, and materials of the trade or trades to which assigned. Has the ability to operate a motor vehicle. Operating Needs: Has the capacity to work both independently and in a team environment.

Possesses effective and respectful interpersonal skills. At minimum, has a High School Diploma or GED. Possess a valid New York State Driver License, Class D or above (other than a motorcycle license); this is verified through the NY State Department of Motor Vehicles.

Must pass LENS Check. This enables employee to pick up and deliver tools & equipment used in normal maintenance activities. Must be able to obtain Operations and Maintenance certification for asbestos removal.

Minimum Qualifications REQUIREMENTS Minimum Qualifications: Labor Class: There are no education or experience qualifications for this class. Applicants must be physically able to perform the tasks of the position and be able to understand and carry out written or oral instructions. When required to operate motor vehicles, incumbents must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle being operated.

Preferred Qualifications: Technical training/education in related skills. Skilled in one or more trades. Demonstrates computer literacy.
