Aquarium Maintenance Technician & Installer

Saltwater, Reef & Freshwater Systems

The Oceans R Us — Novi, MI

Pay: $30–$40 per hour, depending on experience
Job Type: Part-Time, 1099 Independent Contractor
Schedule: Monday–Friday, with optional Saturday hours
Growth Opportunity: Path to Full-Time

About the Position

The Oceans R Us designs, installs, and maintains custom aquariums for residential and commercial clients throughout Metro Detroit.

We are looking for an experienced Aquarium Maintenance Technician & Installer with extensive hands-on knowledge of saltwater, reef, and freshwater aquarium systems.

This is not an entry-level or hobbyist position. The ideal candidate is an experienced aquarium professional who can independently service and install aquarium systems and assist with estimating and pricing new custom aquarium projects.

Responsibilities

  • Service and maintain saltwater, reef, and freshwater aquariums
  • Diagnose aquarium, filtration, water-quality, and equipment issues
  • Install aquariums, stands, filtration systems, equipment, and related plumbing
  • Prepare cost estimates for new aquarium builds and tank systems for prospective clients
  • Work directly with suppliers to obtain equipment, material, and system costs used to prepare final client estimates
  • Perform professional on-site work at clients’ homes and businesses
  • Communicate professionally with clients, suppliers, and the Oceans R Us team
  • Work independently and manage assigned service calls and installations

Drive time between scheduled jobs is paid.

Compensation & Schedule

  • $30–$40/hour, depending on experience
  • 1099 independent contractor position
  • Paid drive time
  • Paid every two weeks
  • Monday–Friday schedule
  • Saturday hours may occasionally be available for those who want additional hours
  • Performance review after 90 days and annually thereafter
  • Part-time to start, with the intention of developing the position into a full-time opportunity

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • 10+ years of professional aquarium maintenance and installation experience
  • Extensive hands-on experience with saltwater, reef, AND freshwater systems
  • Experience installing tanks, stands, filtration systems, equipment, and aquarium-related plumbing
  • Ability to develop accurate cost estimates for new aquarium builds and complete tank systems
  • Experience working with suppliers to obtain base costs for equipment, materials, and system components
  • Reliable vehicle and ability to travel to client locations throughout Metro Detroit
  • Professional appearance and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and reliably as a 1099 contractor
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to high-quality workmanship

This position requires substantial professional aquarium experience. Applicants without professional saltwater, reef, and freshwater experience will not be considered.
