Job description

Job Title: Apprentice Electrician

Job Description

This role involves supporting a mechanical shutdown at a large industrial facility in Northern Alberta, focusing on electrical heat trace systems. You will roll back and reinstall electrical heat trace during mechanical activities, perform testing once work is completed, and follow strict lockout/tagout procedures to ensure a safe and efficient shutdown.

Responsibilities

  • Roll back existing electrical heat trace (EHT) systems to allow mechanical shutdown activities to proceed safely.
  • Reinstall electrical heat trace systems once mechanical operations are completed, ensuring proper routing and secure installation.
  • Test electrical heat trace systems after reinstallation to confirm correct operation and compliance with project standards.
  • Apply and follow lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures to isolate electrical equipment and maintain a safe work environment during shutdown activities.
  • Work with both mineral insulated (MI) and self-regulating (SR) electrical heat trace systems in an industrial setting.
  • Support mechanical shutdown activities by coordinating with other trades and following site schedules and instructions.
  • Interpret and work from large industrial facility electrical diagrams and blueprints to complete tasks accurately.
  • Assist with industrial electrical maintenance tasks related to heat tracing and associated equipment as required.
  • Collaborate with team leads and other electricians to plan work, prioritize tasks, and meet project deadlines.
  • Follow all site safety procedures, including the use of required personal protective equipment and adherence to H2S safety protocols.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of work performed, including tests, inspections, and any issues identified during installation or testing.
  • Work extended shifts in a camp environment during the full duration of the shutdown, adapting to either day or night shift as assigned.

Essential Skills

  • Indentured 3rd or 4th year Apprentice Electrician status.
  • Minimum 1 year of industrial electrical experience with heat tracing.
  • Hands-on experience with mineral insulated (MI) and self-regulating (SR) electrical heat trace systems.
  • Experience with industrial electrical maintenance in large facilities.
  • Ability to follow and apply lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures safely and consistently.
  • Experience reading and interpreting large industrial facility electrical diagrams and blueprints.
  • H2S Alive certification.
  • Comfort with mandatory drug and alcohol testing as part of site access requirements.
  • Ability to work safely and effectively in a camp-based, industrial shutdown environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and adherence to safety standards when working on energized and de-energized equipment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working with e-houses in an industrial setting.
  • Previous experience in team-based industrial projects, including supporting team leads and coordinating tasks.
  • Industrial electrical maintenance, particularly involving heat tracing systems.
  • Ability to adapt to changing project timelines and potential extensions of shutdown work.
  • Strong communication skills for coordinating with other trades and site personnel.
  • Comfort working long shifts and rotating schedules in remote locations.

Why Work Here?

This opportunity offers the chance to gain valuable industrial experience in a large-scale facility while working on a defined shutdown project. You receive a competitive project-based wage, weekly pay, and full travel and camp accommodations, reducing out-of-pocket expenses. The rotation-based schedule supports extended time off between shifts, and strong performance can open doors to future projects with the same organization, providing ongoing career development and exposure to complex industrial environments.

Work Environment

The role is based in a remote camp at a large industrial facility in Northern Alberta during a mechanical shutdown. You will work on-site for the full duration of the shutdown, with the timeline running from early fall through the end of October and the possibility of extension. Travel is provided from major hubs such as Calgary and Edmonton, and all camp accommodations are included. Schedules typically follow either a 12 days on / 2 days off rotation or a 6 days on / 1 day off rotation, with 12-hour shifts starting at 7:00 a.m. Both day and night shifts may be required, and overtime applies after 44 hours in a week. The environment is industrial and safety-focused, with strict adherence to procedures, including lockout/tagout and H2S safety protocols. You will work outdoors and indoors in a large plant setting, handling electrical heat trace systems and related equipment while following site-specific rules, PPE requirements, and camp living standards.
