What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Aircraft Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Aircraft Design Engineer, a solid grounding in aerospace or mechanical engineering principles, supported by a relevant degree, is essential. Familiarity with CAD software (such as CATIA or SolidWorks), finite element analysis tools, and knowledge of industry standards are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork skills help new engineers excel in collaborative and technically demanding environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring safe, innovative, and efficient aircraft designs that meet regulatory and performance standards.

What kinds of projects and tasks can an entry level aircraft design engineer expect to work on in their first year?

As an entry level aircraft design engineer, you will typically be involved in supporting senior engineers with tasks such as drafting technical drawings, running simulations, and assisting with component design and testing. You'll likely participate in team meetings, learn to use industry-standard CAD software, and help document design changes or test results. Expect to collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams including aerodynamics, materials, and manufacturing engineers. These early projects are designed to help you build foundational skills, understand the company's design processes, and contribute meaningfully while receiving mentorship.

What does an Entry Level Aircraft Design Engineer do?

An Entry Level Aircraft Design Engineer assists in designing and developing aircraft and related components under the supervision of senior engineers. Their responsibilities typically include creating technical drawings, performing basic calculations, conducting simulations, and supporting testing activities. Job description

Introduction:

Visium Resources has been asked to identify qualified candidates for this Airframe Design Engineer position. This position is a contract OR POTENTIAL direct hire opportunity, and will be on-site in Vero Beach, FL.
Position Summary:
As a member of the Product Development IPT, you will support the Airframe Design Lead Engineer in all aspects of airframe design. You will contribute to primary and secondary structural design for current and future aircraft, producing CAD models, detail and assembly drawings, and installation documentation. You may also support shop floor and experimental hangar activities related to airframe design for prototype and production articles.
This role is part of the Product Development IPT where we design the future of our product fleet. In the IPT, we've broken down silo walls to quickly and collaboratively assess and execute projects. We stay with our developments from inception through type certification, and we take ownership, creating the best possible products within our constraints.

The ideal candidate thrives in a collaborative, small-team environment where individual problem-solving, hands-on execution, and full project ownership are critical to success. Unlike larger organizations with narrowly segmented responsibilities, this role requires engineers to take a comprehensive, 'big picture' approach to their work. Candidates will be expected to engage across all phases of the design process, actively collaborating with team members and stakeholders to drive projects through to successful completion.
Essential Job Functions:
  • Produce conceptual layouts, manual installation, and assembly design and detail drawings using Siemens NX computer aided design (CAD)
  • Compose Engineering Orders (EO) to release new drawings, correct drafting/design errors, revise design, or incorporate changes/modifications to existing three dimensional models and drawings utilizing Siemens NX
  • Understand program requirements and create designs to fulfill the program requirements
  • Understand and prioritize design/drafting assignments and tasks to support published program schedules and timeline commitments
  • Coordinate design work with stress analysts, aerodynamics, manufacturing, supply management, and other team members
  • Review and validate installations and components through simulation, analysis, and on-aircraft installation fit-checks
  • Support production in the troubleshooting of assembly, installation, and operational problems
  • Participate in general IPT project meetings as required during the development of a specific project
  • Support the IPT in the preparation of material for presentation at design and program reviews
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Education And Experience:
Required:
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering; preferably Mechanical or Aerospace, with three (3) years of directly related experience, or equivalent
  • General knowledge of all phases of aircraft design, approval, manufacturing, and service; including familiarity with all manufacturing processes and techniques relative to fabrication and assembly
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling and design practices
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite
Preferred:
  • Proficiency in Siemens NX
  • General knowledge of engineering configuration management using Teamcenter
  • An understanding and working knowledge of Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) Part 23 and associated guidance material as it pertains to this technical discipline
  • Knowledge of ANSI 14.5 or GD&T practices
Language Skills:
  • The employee must possess the ability to communicate effectively with all internal and external customers in both written and oral form
