Description
The Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) is seeking to hire a student assistant to support human resources functions. This opportunity is ideal for students interested in gaining practical experience in general personnel operations, law office administration, and state government. Employment
This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.
Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check: educational verification (degree, license, or official transcript) or DMV clearance. Applicants will be required to pass required pre-employment checks to the satisfaction of University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) and the hiring Agency or Department.
UEI does not allow students to hold more than one UEI Job at a time, or work in more than one account per pay period. UEI employees who are considering leaving their current UEI student assistant position for a different UEI student assistant position should inform their supervisor in writing and provide at least a week's notice.
UEI is not a multi-state employer. UEI only employs candidates who live and work in the state of California. If selected for the position you must reside in California and all work must be performed in the state of California.
Prerequisites
Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring and Winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list. Students must be enrolled in at least: six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.
Students declared major must match the major(s) listed in the job posting.
Majors/Fields of Study
Business/Business Administration (all concentrations), Management, Communication Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Liberal Studies, Public Policy & Administration, Law, Anthropology, Social Science, Women's & Gender Studies, Ethnic Studies, Gerontology, English, Journalism, or Public Health.
Work Schedule
Flexible workdays and work hours, Monday - Friday, between 8 AM - 5 PM. The final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.
Additional Work Schedule
Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday - Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).
Compensation
$17.00 - $20.00 per hour
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.95.
  • Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to quickly learn and effectively use new applications and software systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate professionally with internal staff and external constituents.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and manage competing deadlines.
  • High level of attention to detail with the ability to process requests accurately and consistently.
  • Ability to assess and prioritize problems, resolve issues independently when possible, and escalate appropriately when needed.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with peers and staff across departments.
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing excellent customer service.
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to complete assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Individuals who are, or have been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth or a formerly incarcerated youth as defined by Government Code section 18220 are encouraged to apply and will be given priority. Please note that prior to appointment, individuals claiming preference under one of these categories will be required to furnish documentation establishing their eligibility.
  • Prior office experience is ideal.
  • Prior experience working on general personnel functions is preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of communication and documentation standards.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain organized files, logs, and tracking spreadsheets across HR program areas.
  • Prepare routine correspondence, reports, and summaries for staff review.
  • Conduct basic research on HR policies, procedures, and regulations as assigned.
  • Assist with Verification of Employment (VOE) requests by gathering necessary information for staff approval.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support the Human Resources Office.
  • Assist staff in gathering, organizing, and reviewing payroll-related documents for monthly reconciliation.
  • Help verify timesheets for completeness and flag discrepancies for staff review.
  • Support the maintenance of the California Leave Accounting System (CLAS) by preparing documentation for leave corrections and updates.
  • Assist with compiling monthly leave balance reports for management.
  • Provide clerical support with benefit enrollment forms, open enrollment packets, and retirement documentation.
  • Help review benefit documents for completeness and route them to appropriate staff for final review.
  • Prepare and organize benefit materials for new employees
  • Assist with posting vacancies on the Examination and Certification Online System.
  • Help prepare candidate contact letters.
  • Assist in reviewing hiring documents for completeness and assembling onboarding materials for new employees.

Physical Requirements
Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, scanners, shredders, and fax machines; use of basic tools and ability to lift/move up to 40 lbs. with or without a reasonable accommodation.
