Entry Level 3D Design Engineer information

What is the difference between Entry Level 3D Design Engineer vs CAD Technician?

AspectEntry Level 3D Design EngineerCAD Technician
Required CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's in Engineering, Design, or related fieldDiploma or certification in CAD software
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, engineering firms, manufacturingArchitectural, engineering, or manufacturing settings
Industry UsageDesigning 3D models, prototypes, and engineering drawingsCreating detailed 2D/3D CAD drawings based on specifications

Entry Level 3D Design Engineers focus on developing 3D models and prototypes, often requiring engineering knowledge. CAD Technicians primarily produce detailed CAD drawings based on specifications, with less emphasis on engineering analysis. Both roles are essential in product development and share similar work environments, but they differ in scope and technical focus.

How to become an entry level 3D design engineer?

To become an entry-level 3D design engineer, typically a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, industrial design, or a related field is required. Proficiency in 3D modeling software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Fusion 360 is essential, along with strong technical skills and a portfolio of relevant projects. Gaining internship experience or certifications can also improve job prospects in this field.

Is entry level 3D design engineer still in demand?

Entry level 3D design engineers are in demand in industries such as manufacturing, automotive, and aerospace, where skills in CAD software like SolidWorks or AutoCAD are valued. As companies continue to adopt 3D modeling and visualization technologies, entry-level positions remain available for those with foundational skills and a relevant portfolio.

  • Experience preparing manufacturing drawings, Bills of Materials and engineering change documentation.
  • Strong understanding of engineering drawing standards and manufacturing processes.
  • Valid driver's licence and ability to travel to customer and manufacturing sites within North America.
Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Fixed Plant mining equipment.
  • Chute, hopper, conveyor or wear liner design.
