What does an entry data engineer do?

An Entry Data Engineer is responsible for assisting in the design, development, and maintenance of data pipelines and databases. They work with raw data, helping to clean, organize, and prepare it for analysis by more senior engineers or data scientists. Their tasks often include writing basic SQL queries, automating data collection processes, and supporting data quality initiatives. Entry-level data engineers typically work under the guidance of more experienced team members to learn best practices and develop their technical skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry data engineer?

To thrive as an Entry Data Engineer, you need a solid understanding of programming (often Python or SQL), data structures, and database fundamentals, typically supported by a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with ETL tools, cloud data platforms (such as AWS or Azure), and version control systems like Git is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with teams and troubleshoot data issues. These skills are crucial to ensure high-quality, efficient data pipelines and enable data-driven decision-making within organizations.

What are some common challenges faced by entry data engineers during their first year on the job?

Entry-level data engineers often encounter challenges such as learning new data pipeline tools, understanding complex legacy systems, and adapting to the fast pace of data-driven environments. Balancing requests from multiple stakeholders and ensuring data accuracy can also be demanding, especially when dealing with large datasets. However, most teams provide mentorship and training to help new hires get up to speed, and collaboration with experienced engineers is encouraged to support skill development.

Drilling & Completions Data Technician

Fervo Energy

Houston, TX • On-site

Full-time

Posted 18 days ago

Job description

Description

Fervo is working to build the most cost-effective, repeatable geothermal power plants in the world. Delivering on this mission requires operational excellence across every function - including the accurate capture, validation, and reporting of drilling and completions data. Joining Fervo's Drilling & Completions team means supporting the backbone of field execution, ensuring operational data is reliable, timely, and actionable as Fervo scales its geothermal development program.

We are seeking a Drilling & Completions Data Technician who is excited by Fervo's mission and motivated to support high-quality data workflows across drilling and completions operations. This role will own the flow of information coming from our drilling rigs and completions crews. You'll capture it accurately, organize it across our systems, and turn it into something engineers and geoscientists can trust for real-time decisions in the field. This is a hands-on, detail-driven role for someone who wants to be the connective tissue between field operations and the technical teams relying on that data.

Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a day-to-day power user of field data reporting systems (e.g., WellView or equivalent) managing data entry standards, custom fields, pick lists, and reporting templates.
  • Maintain and quality-check daily drilling and completions operations reports, identifying and resolving data discrepancies before they reach engineering teams.
  • Maintain dashboards, spreadsheets, and reports tracking drilling performance, completions performance, and well costs.
  • Keep wellbore diagrams, well files, and procedure documentation current and audit-ready.
  • Partner with well site supervisors to ensure field software is configured, licensed, and working.
  • Support HSE, Land, and Regulatory teams with data pulls for compliance requests.
  • Identify opportunities to automate manual reporting workflows and improve data quality across systems.

Qualifications

  • 2-5 years of experience in drilling and completions data management, well site data systems, or a related technical role.
  • Familiarity with?WellView?(preferred)?or similar drilling and completions data systems?
  • Strong Excel skills; familiarity with WellView and Power BI is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of drilling and completions terminology, wellbore diagrams, and daily operations reports.
  • High attention to detail and comfort working with messy, real-time field data.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a technical field, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience working in fast-paced, execution-focused project environments
  • A deep curiosity paired with a drive to continuously improve how the company captures, organizes, and uses data.
