Position Status:ย  Salaried, Exempt, Full-time, 10-month

Work Hours: Typical hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Some weekend and evening work may be required.ย

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS


The requirements below represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for a successful candidate.

  • A bachelorโ€™s degree in English, English Education, or a closely related field is required. A masterโ€™s or other advanced degree in English or education is strongly preferred.
  • A minimum of two years of experience teaching English at the upper school or secondary level is preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in fostering a rigorous and engaging classroom environment is desirable.
  • Strong content knowledge in literature, writing, grammar, and critical analysis.
  • Familiarity with various instructional approaches and the ability to differentiate instruction for diverse learners.
  • Ability to design and implement assessments that measure student understanding and support growth.
  • Dedication to the academic, social, and emotional development of adolescents.
  • Proven ability to build positive, respectful relationships with students, colleagues, and families.
  • Competence in integrating educational technology into classroom instruction.
  • Willingness to use digital platforms for communication, assessment, and collaboration.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Teaches four (4) sections of English
  • Works directly with 18 Upper School English teachers as part of an English PLC to develop curriculum and assessments
  • Co-teaches a 3-week immersive, interdisciplinary class during JanTerm
  • Advises students as part of the Upper School Advisory Program
  • Provides regular assistance to students in the Upper School Writing Center and covers classes for colleagues when needed
  • Contributes to the larger school community through coaching or sponsoring other extracurricular programs. Depending on the candidate's expertise, responsibilities may include working with student publications.
  • Perform other duties as assignedย

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT


While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, and feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl; talk and hear; engage in moderately strenuous physical activity both indoors and out. The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The ability to become certified in CPR, AED, and First Aid is required.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee may occasionally be exposed to outside weather conditions and frequently walk on slippery or uneven surfaces.ย  The noise level in the work environment is often loud.

Travel is primarily local during the regular business day.ย  Overnight and out-of-area travel may also be required, primarily for planned events, conferences, and professional development opportunities.
