What We Look For In a AP English Language and Composition Tutor
  • Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of rhetorical analysis, argumentation, synthesis of sources, nonfiction prose analysis, rhetorical strategies including ethos, pathos, and logos, and composition techniques. Emphasizes developing a sophisticated analytical voice and connecting rhetorical analysis to media literacy and civic discourse.
  • Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with AP English Language curriculum and common challenges such as distinguishing rhetorical strategies from literary devices, developing nuanced thesis statements, and managing three essays within the free-response time limit. Adapts instruction using released AP prompts, mentor text analysis, and rubric-based peer review to support students building advanced reading and writing skills for the AP examination.
  • Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
  • Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
  • Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
