Job description

Position: Assistant Professor of English, Creative Writing Fiction

Position Summary:

New Mexico Highlands University is an open-admissions university with over 70% of students being Hispanic, Native American, or African American, and nearly 40% studying at the masterโ€™s level. The university is committed to student success and improved retention and graduation rates. NMHU serves approximately 2,500 undergraduate and graduate students at the main campus in Las Vegas, NM (one hour east of Santa Fe) and another 1,300 students at centers in Rio Rancho, Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Espaรฑola, Farmington, and Raton. The Department of English offers a B.A. in English with traditional, English education, and pre-professional tracks, and minors in English and English Writing. We also offer an M.A. in English with concentrations in literature; creative writing; and literacy, linguistics and composition. The mission of the department is to foster intellectual growth, creativity, and professional success in the literary arts, including the publication of the literary journal The New Mexico Review.

Applications are invited for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor with a contract starting August 2027.

Teaching responsibilities (18 credit hours in the first year; 24 credit hours in subsequent years) include undergraduate and graduate creative writing (fiction), technical writing, composition, and other courses as assigned. In addition to teaching, the selected candidate will be expected to mentor undergraduate and graduate students; conduct research/ creative activity in area of specialization; serve as faculty advisor for The New Mexico Review, and present research/ creative activity at scholarly conferences and in professional publications.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Doctorate or ABD in English, specializing in creative writing (fiction) or related area required by time of appointment, fall 2027. Demonstrated experience in teaching, research, and writing.
