Job description

The Department of Rail and Public Transportation seeks an Engineering Manager to lead the newly created Safety and Design division, overseeing state safety oversight for a light rail system and managing engineering design and construction activities for rail and transit projects funded by Virginia. The role involves engineering oversight, transit safety integration, construction management, professional services contracting, and supervision of engineering staff. This hybrid position is based in Richmond or Alexandria and reports to the Chief of Safety and Design.

Key qualifications:

  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure in Virginia
  • Degree in civil engineering or closely related engineering discipline with transportation engineering experience
  • Strong knowledge of civil engineering principles applicable to roadway, transit, railroad, and multimodal infrastructure
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex projects and communicate technical issues to diverse audiences
  • Experience managing A/E and construction management consultants and leading engineering staff
