What is an engineering tech?

Engineering Techs, or Engineering Technicians, are professionals who assist engineers in designing, developing, testing, and maintaining various products, equipment, or systems. They often work in fields such as manufacturing, electronics, civil engineering, or mechanical engineering. Their duties typically include preparing technical drawings, conducting experiments, collecting data, troubleshooting problems, and ensuring that projects meet quality and safety standards. Engineering Techs bridge the gap between theoretical engineering concepts and practical application in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineering tech, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engineering Tech, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, technical mathematics, and hands-on experience, usually backed by an associate degree or relevant certification. Familiarity with CAD software, measurement instruments, and industry-specific testing equipment is typically required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and effective teamwork make someone stand out in this position. These skills ensure precise execution of engineering tasks, support innovation, and maintain project efficiency and safety.

What are some common challenges engineering techs face when working on cross-functional project teams?

Engineering Techs often collaborate with engineers, designers, and production staff, which can present challenges such as communicating technical details to non-technical team members and balancing multiple project priorities. Adapting to different workflows and ensuring that technical documentation aligns with the needs of each department are also common hurdles. Developing strong communication skills and being proactive in seeking clarification can help overcome these challenges and contribute to project success.

What is the difference between Engineering Tech vs Mechanical Technician?

Engineering Tech and Mechanical Technician roles share similar educational backgrounds and certifications, but differ mainly in their work environments and daily tasks. Engineering Techs focus on supporting engineering projects and testing, while Mechanical Technicians handle hands-on maintenance and repairs. Both roles are vital in manufacturing and industrial sectors, often overlapping in skills but distinct in responsibilities.

Job description

.

At Webco, we don't just make tube-we build careers, develop people, and continuously improve everything we do. We're looking for a Mechanical Engineer who thrives on solving problems, improving processes, and making a real impact on the plant floor.

If you're energized by turning complex challenges into practical solutions and want to see your ideas drive real operational results, this role is for you.

As a Mechanical Engineer at Webco, you'll be at the center of operations-working closely with production, quality, and leadership teams to improve performance, efficiency, and safety.

You will:

  • Analyze and improve production processes, equipment, and workflows
  • Design and implement solutions that enhance safety, quality, and cost efficiency
  • Lead and support process improvement and cost-reduction initiatives
  • Conduct time studies, capacity analysis, and work measurement to establish standards
  • Use data and engineering principles to identify root causes and solve problems
  • Develop reports with clear, actionable recommendations
  • Support facility layout, material flow, and manpower optimization
  • Partner cross-functionally to improve production performance and reduce waste
  • Develop and maintain SOPs and support quality and audit initiatives
  • Train and support teams on new processes and improvements
  • Monitor results and drive continuous improvement

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Industrial, or Engineering Technology
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Experience with AutoCAD and/or SolidWorks
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work across teams

Preferred:

  • Manufacturing or industrial experience
  • Experience with process improvement or continuous improvement methodologies

At Webco, our engineers:

  • Take ownership and follow through
  • Collaborate and build trust across teams
  • Stay curious and continuously improve
  • Put safety first-always
  • Hold a high bar for quality and performance
  • Show up engaged and ready to make a difference

Work Environment

This role splits time between office and plant floor. You'll be hands-on in a dynamic manufacturing setting, with:

  • Exposure to equipment, noise, and production activity
  • Required PPE in plant areas (hearing protection, safety glasses, steel-toe shoes)
  • Physical activity including walking, standing, and occasional lifting

Why Webco?

Because here, your work matters. You won't be sitting on the sidelines-you'll be driving real change, developing your skills, and helping build something better every day.
