Job description

Engineering Intern

American Bottoms Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility, located in Sauget Illinois, is seeking a Plant Engineer Summer Intern. American Bottoms is a regional wastewater treatment facility providing services to Sauget, East St. Louis, Cahokia, and the surrounding communities. In 2014 the facility was awarded "Plant of The Year" by the Illinois Association of Water Pollution Control Operators. In addition, American Bottoms has been recognized as one of the best companies to work for in Illinois; six years in a row. These awards are a testament to the dedication, skill and pride of American Bottoms employees.

Interns will work closely with plant staff to develop a sound knowledge of daily and long-term activities involved in operating and maintaining a Wastewater Treatment Facility. Interns will also become versed in all phases of project management gaining real-world knowledge of planning, implementation and maintenance activities.

  • Hours: up to 40/week


  • Primary Functions
    • Manage Operation and Maintenance Projects
      • Supervise small scale equipment upgrades and oversee projects from planning stage through construction and end-user training.


  • Support Plant Engineers during their daily activities
    • Primary activities include: Updating/producing new electrical diagrams and misc. plant drawings; updating/creating new Operations & Maintenance Manuals for new/existing plant equipment including Preventative Maintenance Schedules; Labeling existing/new plant equipment; assisting in small scale engineering projects; miscellaneous tasks


  • Qualifications:
    • Current engineering student entering in Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
    • AutoCad Experience is preferred
    • Microsoft Office and Microsoft Excel experience is a must
    • Clerical/office experience is desired
    • Knowledge of OSHA 1910 standards is a plus
    • Experience with construction plans and electrical one-line diagrams is a plus

Minimum Requirements

  • Requires Intermediate skills with Excel.
  • Must meet the physical requirements including, but not limited to lifting, walking, standing, and sitting.
  • Working towards degree in physical or chemical sciences

  • Must have good organizational skills
  • Analytical, critical-thinking, technical, and problem-solving skills and abilities.
