Familiarity with project management tools (such as Jira or Asana), version control systems (like Git), and potentially certifications such as PMP or Scrum Master are highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and team-building skills distinguish top performers in this role. They coordinate projects, manage team members, allocate resources, and ensure that engineering goals align with company objectives. Their role often involves a combination of technical expertise, leadership, and administrative skills to deliver successful engineering solutions on time and within budget.

How does an engineering manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

Engineering Managers are often required to split their time between technical oversight—such as code reviews, architecture decisions, and project planning—and people management tasks like mentoring, performance reviews, and team development. Striking this balance can be challenging, especially in fast-paced environments. Successful Engineering Managers usually prioritize regular one-on-ones, foster open communication, and delegate technical tasks wisely to ensure both project goals and team morale are maintained. This dual focus helps nurture a high-performing, collaborative team while ensuring technical excellence.

Job description

About WorkWhileWorkWhile is on a mission to help workers earn a better living and live better lives. More than 80 million Americans work hourly jobs, often with unpredictable schedules that pay close to minimum wage and offer limited benefits, leading to financial instability.
WorkWhile is revolutionizing frontline work by creating a more flexible and efficient labor market. Powered by AI, the WorkWhile platform helps businesses quickly access high-quality talent. Workers benefit from same-day pay, free telehealth services, upskilling, and the ability to choose shifts that match their skills and schedules.

About the role
WorkWhile is looking for an Engineering Manager to help lead our growing Engineering team. You'll manage and mentor a small team while staying hands-on with architecture and technical strategy. As an early leader on the team, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping WorkWhile's engineering culture, driving technical excellence, and contributing to company-wide strategy as we scale. This role reports into our Head of Engineering.
What you'll do
  • Drive execution on key product initiatives and outcomes-from shaping technical direction to delivering high-quality user-facing features.
  • Be a force multiplier, leading, managing and growing a small team of engineers, while strategically hiring and evolving the team as we scale.
  • Work with leadership to align engineering priorities with company-wide OKRs and shape long-term product and technical strategy.
  • Champion engineering best practices and be a steward of code quality, system design, and technical decision-making. Operate with a balance of coaching and hands-on involvement.

What we're looking for
  • 2+ years of experience managing engineers. Proven ability to recruit, develop, and retain world-class engineering talent, fostering a culture of ownership, learning, and impact.
  • Strong hands-on experience with shipping production software and modern web technologies-React, TypeScript, Python/Flask, Postgres (or similar stacks).
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills-you're comfortable working cross-functionally and making tradeoffs with product/design and other stakeholders.
  • Experience building growth features, internal tools, or working in marketplace or B2B SaaS contexts.

Engineering @ WorkWhile
  • We're a small and mighty team with senior engineers from Airbnb, Amazon, Google, Lyft among others
  • We value user-centricity, competence, speed, and having fun
  • We embrace independence and take ownership of our projects, yet are also great team players
  • We deal in outcomes, not projects
  • Read more about our team at https://tech.workwhile.ai/

Benefits & Perks
  • Hybrid work culture with office hubs in SF, NY, Seattle & Toronto
  • In-person company off-sites
  • Medical, dental, & vision coverage
  • Flexible time off
  • 401(k) with employer match
  • WFH stipend to support your home office needs
