What is an engineering manager?

Engineering Managers are professionals responsible for leading and overseeing engineering teams within an organization. They coordinate projects, manage team members, allocate resources, and ensure that engineering goals align with company objectives. Their role often involves a combination of technical expertise, leadership, and administrative skills to deliver successful engineering solutions on time and within budget.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineering manager?

To thrive as an Engineering Manager, you need a strong background in engineering principles, project management, and leadership, typically with a degree in engineering and prior technical experience. Familiarity with project management tools (such as Jira or Asana), version control systems (like Git), and potentially certifications such as PMP or Scrum Master are highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and team-building skills distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities are crucial for successfully leading technical teams, delivering projects on time, and aligning engineering output with organizational goals.

How does an engineering manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

Engineering Managers are often required to split their time between technical oversight—such as code reviews, architecture decisions, and project planning—and people management tasks like mentoring, performance reviews, and team development. Striking this balance can be challenging, especially in fast-paced environments. Successful Engineering Managers usually prioritize regular one-on-ones, foster open communication, and delegate technical tasks wisely to ensure both project goals and team morale are maintained. This dual focus helps nurture a high-performing, collaborative team while ensuring technical excellence.

What is the difference between Engineering Manager vs Software Development Manager?

AspectEngineering ManagerSoftware Development Manager
Primary FocusOversees engineering teams, technical projects, and product developmentManages software development teams, project timelines, and coding processes

Understanding these distinctions helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Are engineering managers paid well?

Engineering managers typically earn high salaries due to their leadership responsibilities, technical expertise, and experience level. Compensation varies by industry, location, and company size but generally includes base pay, bonuses, and stock options, reflecting the seniority of the role.

What do you do as an engineering manager?

An engineering manager oversees engineering teams, coordinates project planning, and ensures technical goals are met. They manage resources, facilitate communication between teams and stakeholders, and often have technical expertise to guide development processes. Leadership, problem-solving, and knowledge of engineering tools are essential skills in this role.

Lead Teams. Solve Complex Challenges. Shape the Future of Semiconductor Manufacturing.

Axcelis Technologies is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Manager I to lead a talented team of engineers developing advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment. This is an opportunity to combine technical leadership, people development, and product execution while helping deliver innovative systems used by the world's leading chip manufacturers.

As a Mechanical Engineering Manager, you will guide engineers through complex technical challenges, support the development of next-generation products, and create an environment where individuals and teams can do their best work. You will work closely with cross-functional partners across systems, electrical engineering, controls, software, manufacturing, quality, and product management to bring innovative ideas from concept to production.

If you are passionate about developing engineers, driving technical excellence, and delivering meaningful products that solve real customer challenges, we would like to hear from you.

What You Will Do

Lead and Develop a High-Performing Team

  • Coach, mentor, and develop a team of mechanical engineers across varying experience levels.
  • Create an environment that encourages innovation, collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning.
  • Support career growth through meaningful feedback, development planning, and technical mentoring.
  • Recruit and retain talented engineers who raise the level of technical capability across the organization.

Drive Technical Excellence

  • Provide technical leadership for the design and development of complex mechanical systems and subsystems.
  • Guide engineering teams through architecture decisions, design reviews, validation activities, and technical problem solving.
  • Ensure designs meet requirements for performance, reliability, manufacturability, cost, and safety.
  • Promote engineering rigor through sound analysis, risk management, and data-driven decision making.

Deliver Innovative Products

  • Partner with program management and cross-functional teams to execute development programs from concept through product release.
  • Align team priorities and resources with business objectives and project commitments.
  • Remove obstacles, manage technical risks, and help teams successfully execute against schedule and performance goals.
  • Support product improvements, issue resolution, and continuous enhancement of engineering processes and tools.

What Success Looks Like

  • Engineers are growing, engaged, and performing at a high level.
  • Development programs are executed with strong technical discipline and predictable results.
  • Mechanical designs meet performance, quality, reliability, and manufacturability objectives.
  • Cross-functional teams view you as a trusted technical leader and collaborative partner.
  • Your team consistently delivers solutions that create value for customers and business.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • 7+ years of experience developing mechanical or electromechanical products in a technical environment.
  • Experience leading engineering projects, mentoring engineers, or providing technical leadership.
  • Demonstrated success designing complex systems, subsystems, or assemblies.
  • Strong understanding of product development from concept through production release.
  • Experience with 3D CAD and PLM tools (Creo/Windchill or equivalent).
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Prior experience managing direct reports within an engineering organization.
  • Experience in semiconductor capital equipment, automation, robotics, vacuum systems, precision motion, or advanced manufacturing.
  • Experience supporting new product introduction (NPI) programs.
  • Knowledge of engineering analysis and validation methodologies.
  • Familiarity with SEMI standards, cleanroom environments, or high-reliability systems.
  • Experience driving continuous improvement initiatives.

Technical Skills

  • Mechanical system and subsystem design
  • Precision mechanism development
  • GD&T and tolerance analysis
  • Design verification and validation
  • Root cause analysis and structured problem solving
  • Risk assessment and engineering decision making
  • CAD and PLM systems (Creo/Windchill preferred)

Why Join Axcelis Technologies

  • Lead engineers working on highly differentiated technology.
  • Influence both product innovation and team development.
  • Solve technically complex challenges with real-world impact.
  • Collaborate with talented engineers in a highly technical environment.
  • Help shape the future of semiconductor manufacturing through products used around the world.
  • Build your leadership career while remaining closely connected to technology and product development.

What We Are Looking For

  • A leader who enjoys developing people as much as solving technical challenges.
  • A systems thinker who understands how engineering decisions influence overall product performance.
  • A collaborative problem solver who brings clarity to complex situations.
  • A manager who creates alignment, drives execution, and inspires teams to achieve ambitious goals.
  • An engineering leader who raises the bar through technical rigor, curiosity, and continuous improvement.
