Substation Engineering Manager – West Region


Location: West Region, U.S.

Position Overview
FindTalent is seeking a highly skilled Substation Engineering Manager to join our client’s growing Power Delivery team in the West Region. This role is integral to overseeing the execution and development of substation projects while leading business development efforts, team growth, and client relationships. The ideal candidate will be responsible for ensuring that technical, operational, and project management standards are met or exceeded during the execution of all assigned projects. This position requires a strong leadership presence in the regional office and occasional domestic travel.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the design and development of substation and switching station projects, including physical and protection/control (P&C) design.
  • Manage greenfield projects, equipment replacement programs, and other major substation upgrades.
  • Conduct engineering analyses, estimates, and design presentations for clients and stakeholders.
  • Maintain and apply broad and in-depth knowledge of utility power systems, codes, and industry standards.
  • Lead engineering tasks related to substation physical design, grounding, relay systems, and communication systems.
  • Develop and validate electrical system models, protection schemes, and technical specifications for equipment.
  • Build and lead a team of up to five engineers and designers, fostering growth and excellence.
  • Coordinate, review, and ensure consistency across team deliverables.
  • Develop processes and implement best practices for technical project execution.
  • Drive business development initiatives, including proposal creation and client engagement.
  • Cultivate and maintain client relationships to support project pipelines and ensure satisfaction.
  • Conduct site surveys, field evaluations, and walk-downs with clients and contractors.
  • Prepare and review field take-offs, estimates, and project documents for accuracy and feasibility.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program (or equivalent).
  • 10+ years of relevant experience, including substation project execution and EPC project experience.
  • 3+ years of engineering management experience; experience building a team from the ground up preferred.
  • Active PE license preferred.
  • Strong understanding of power system protection, relay schemes, and electrical specifications.
  • Exceptional communication and business development skills, with prior client-facing experience preferred.

Compensation

  • Base Salary: $150,000 - $180,000 (commensurate with experience and location).
