What is an engineering manager?

Engineering Managers are professionals responsible for leading and overseeing engineering teams within an organization. They coordinate projects, manage team members, allocate resources, and ensure that engineering goals align with company objectives. Their role often involves a combination of technical expertise, leadership, and administrative skills to deliver successful engineering solutions on time and within budget.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineering manager?

To thrive as an Engineering Manager, you need a strong background in engineering principles, project management, and leadership, typically with a degree in engineering and prior technical experience. Familiarity with project management tools (such as Jira or Asana), version control systems (like Git), and potentially certifications such as PMP or Scrum Master are highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and team-building skills distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities are crucial for successfully leading technical teams, delivering projects on time, and aligning engineering output with organizational goals.

How does an engineering manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

Engineering Managers are often required to split their time between technical oversight—such as code reviews, architecture decisions, and project planning—and people management tasks like mentoring, performance reviews, and team development. Striking this balance can be challenging, especially in fast-paced environments. Successful Engineering Managers usually prioritize regular one-on-ones, foster open communication, and delegate technical tasks wisely to ensure both project goals and team morale are maintained. This dual focus helps nurture a high-performing, collaborative team while ensuring technical excellence.

Job description

From our nation’s earliest days, ABCorp has been a trusted force in security and innovation. In 1795, the federally chartered Bank of the United States entrusted American Bank Note Company with the critical mission of producing counterfeit-resistant currency for the young Republic. This early history established our company, now known as ABCorp, as a pioneer in secure printing, with innovations that served not only American banks but also international clients, a legacy that shaped our evolution into a global leader in secure manufacturing. What began with protecting America’s financial foundation now drives cutting-edge solutions that safeguard organizations worldwide.

Today, ABCorp sits at the intersection where authentication, payments, and secure access embrace next-gen (including additive 3D) manufacturing to meet the demands of a digitally driven world. We have built 230 Years of Expertise – no one knows secure manufacturing and authentication better, and no one has done it longer. We maintain global reach and compliance with eight locations around the world, and we’ve been trusted by fintechs, financial institutions, healthcare companies, governments, and brands across 120+ countries. We deliver end-to-end innovation through high-security, state-of-the-art facilities that are incubators for advancements in payments, secure access, and additive manufacturing.

The Team

At ABCorp, we know that our legacy and decades of achievement are powered by an exceptional team that embodies a true startup mindset.

The Platform Engineering Team at ABCorp owns the full data and integration infrastructure that powers our products and business. We build and operate the pipelines, APIs, and integrations that move critical data across our systems — from ERP and manufacturing to CRM, product analytics, and customer-facing platforms. Our team works closely with Engineering, Product, Analytics, and IT to ensure that every part of the organization has access to reliable, well-modeled, and actionable data. This is a domain with real breadth: operational data, customer data, analytics, and the platform capabilities that tie it all together.

The Role

ABCorp is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead our Platform Engineering team — a player-coach role with direct responsibility for the people, architecture, and delivery across data, analytics, APIs, and integrations. You will manage a team of 3–5 engineers and own the technical foundation that every product team at ABCorp depends on, spanning operational and customer data flows, cloud data infrastructure, API development, and third-party system integrations.

The ideal candidate brings both strong technical depth and genuine enthusiasm for building high-performing teams. You are as comfortable reviewing a data pipeline architecture or an API design as you are running a 1:1, managing roadmap trade-offs with Product leadership, or setting engineering standards that raise the bar for the whole team. This is a hands-on management role with meaningful opportunities to shape ABCorp’s technical platform and its engineering culture.

This is an in-person role with our team based in Boston, MA. Please note there is no Visa Sponsorship for this position.

How You’ll Make a Difference:
  • Lead and develop a team of 3–5 engineers spanning data platform, analytics engineering, API development, and system integrations — setting direction, removing blockers, and building a culture of ownership, quality, and continuous improvement.
  • Own the Platform Engineering roadmap — prioritizing initiatives across data pipelines, warehouse infrastructure, API development, integration architecture, and operational data systems in close collaboration with Product, Sales, and Customer Success.
  • Architect and deliver APIs and integrations that connect ABCorp’s core products to external platforms — including ERP systems, CRM tools, payment networks, and third-party data providers — with a focus on reliability, maintainability, and developer experience.
  • Ensure the reliability, scalability, and observability of ABCorp’s data platform — including cloud data pipelines, the analytics warehouse, data quality frameworks, and the self-service infrastructure that product and business teams depend on daily.
  • Own the operational and customer data domain — the models, pipelines, and reporting layers that power product analytics, customer success, sales operations, and executive reporting across ABCorp’s product lines.
  • Serve as the technical escalation point for your team — reviewing system designs and architecture proposals, unblocking complex cross-team dependencies, and ensuring the platform upholds high standards of reliability and engineering discipline.
  • Drive engineering best practices across the Platform Engineering team — including code quality standards, testing coverage, documentation habits, and delivery rigor — raising the bar as the team and domain scale.
  • Partner with Product Management, Sales, and Customer Success to translate business requirements into a coherent platform roadmap — building cross-functional alignment on priorities, trade-offs, and delivery commitments.

What Excites You
  • Building the enabling layer — the platform infrastructure that every other team depends on — and knowing that the quality of your work is foundational to every product ABCorp ships.
  • Operating at the intersection of data, integrations, and product engineering — where the technical decisions are genuinely complex, the cross-functional surface is broad, and the business impact is direct and measurable.
  • Growing a team and a domain together — not just delivering individual projects, but building lasting engineering capability, raising standards, and developing engineers who can take on increasing ownership over time.
Who You Are
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, Mathematics, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of professional software or data engineering experience, with 2+ years in a formal engineering lead or management role overseeing a technical team.
  • Hands-on technical depth in at least two of the following: data platform engineering (pipelines, warehouse, dbt, Spark), API development (REST, GraphQL, event streaming), system integrations (ETL/ELT, ERP/CRM connectors, webhooks), or analytics engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience owning a technical domain end-to-end — setting engineering standards, driving code quality, managing architecture decisions, and delivering reliably against a roadmap, ideally across a multi-person team.
  • Experience with Azure cloud infrastructure relevant to platform engineering — including Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Databricks, ADLS, Azure API Management, Azure Service Bus, or similar services.
  • Experience with legacy operational systems — ERPs (SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics), CRM platforms, or manufacturing systems — and building integrations or data pipelines that bridge legacy and modern cloud infrastructure.
  • Strong communicator and cross-functional partner — able to represent the Platform Engineering team to Product, Sales, and Executive stakeholders, align on priorities under ambiguity, and translate technical complexity into clear decisions.
  • Experience growing and developing individual contributors — through 1:1s, feedback, career conversations, and giving engineers opportunities that stretch their abilities and build their confidence.
  • Familiarity with payments, card issuance, authentication, identity, fintech, or secure manufacturing is a plus — or a genuine curiosity to learn an industry with real technical depth and meaningful real-world impact.
  • A track record of building high-performing teams where engineers grow, stay, and do their best work.
  • Ability to work onsite in Boston, MA.

Why Join ABCorp?

Own the full Platform Engineering domain — data, analytics, APIs, and integrations — with the visibility, authority, and resources to build it right.

Broad technical scope that touches every product team and every critical data flow in the company — this is not a narrowly defined role.

Direct partnership with Product, Sales, and Engineering leadership — your roadmap priorities will be shaped by and visible to the people driving ABCorp’s growth strategy.

A high-trust engineering culture where technical managers are expected to lead with conviction, invest in their teams, and shape the company’s engineering direction over time.

An opportunity to build something lasting — not just execute projects, but create the platform foundation and team culture that ABCorp will scale on for years to come.

Competitive salary and benefits package.
