Role Summary:
As a Manager of Software Engineering at Filevine, you will lead a team of talented engineers responsible for building and maintaining our core products. Responsibilities
  • Team Leadership & Development

    • Manage, mentor, and coach a team of software engineers (typically 6–12 direct reports).

    • Conduct regular 1:1s, career development conversations, and performance reviews.

    • Recruit, onboard, and retain top engineering talent.

  • Performance Management

    • Set clear goals, expectations, and success metrics for individuals and the team.

    • Run structured performance reviews with fairness, consistency, and clarity.

    • Provide timely, constructive feedback and coaching to help engineers grow

    • Recognize and reward high performers while addressing underperformance with empathy and rigor.

    • Create and maintain career growth paths that align with Filevine’s engineering competency framework.

    • Use data and observation to make decisions on promotions, compensation, and role changes.

  • Execution & Delivery

    • Drive execution of projects from planning through delivery, ensuring quality, scalability, and reliability.

    • Collaborate with Product Management and Design to refine requirements and work with tech leads to translate them into technical plans.

    • Set priorities and remove blockers for your team.

  • Technical Leadership

    • Maintain a deep understanding of the technical stack to guide resource planning. 

    • Ensure adherence to engineering best practices, including testing, code review, and CI/CD.

    • Champion engineering excellence, scalability, and security across the codebase.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration

    • Partner with Product, Design, QA, and other engineering teams to ensure alignment and efficient workflows.

Qualifications
 
    • 10+ years of software engineering experience, with 2+ years in a formal leadership/management role.

    • Ability to contribute with hands-on coding up to 50% of the time
    • Proven experience managing engineering teams in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.

    • Strong technical background in modern web application development (experience with C#, Node.js, TypeScript, AWS, AngularJS, Svelte, SQL Server, Redis, ElasticSearch, etc.).

    • Excellent communication and collaboration skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders.

    • Demonstrated success in scaling teams, mentoring engineers, and delivering complex projects.

    • Comfortable using performance data to guide decisions about promotions, compensation, and career growth.

    • Familiarity with agile methodologies and modern software development practices.

    • Experience running structured performance reviews and providing actionable feedback.

    • Skilled at identifying and addressing performance issues early, with empathy and fairness.

    • Ability to recognize and reward high performance, while supporting underperformers with development plans.


    Preferred Skills
    • Experience working in SaaS or legaltech platforms.

    • Background in scaling distributed systems or enterprise-grade software.

    • Prior experience managing managers or leading multiple squads.

Compensation Information: $185,000 - 212,000
 
The base salary range represents the low and high end of the salary range for this position. The total compensation package for this position will be determined by each individual’s location, qualifications, education, work experience, skills and performance. We believe in the importance of pay equity - the range listed is just one component of Filevine’s total compensation package for employees. This position is also eligible for a paid time off policy, as well as a comprehensive benefits package.
