Engineering Manager

Compensation: Up to $150K - plus benefits, commensurate with experience Location: Western MA Company Description: Our client is a leading supplier of Custom Automated Machinery, Tooling, and Subcontract Manufacturing services. Their customer base includes manufacturers in the semiconductor, aerospace, energy, automotive, medical, and defense industries. Position Description: We are seeking a highly experienced Engineering Manager to lead our client's engineering team while remaining actively involved in the design and development of custom automated machinery and manufacturing systems. This hands-on leadership role requires a strong mechanical engineering background, expertise in custom machine design, and the ability to transform customer challenges into innovative automation solutions. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, project-driven environment where every machine is unique and will serve as both a technical leader and key contributor throughout the project lifecycle.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the engineering department, providing technical direction, mentorship, and oversight of engineering activities.
  • Design and develop custom automation equipment, machinery, and manufacturing systems from concept through installation.
  • Create and review 3D models, assemblies, and engineering drawings using SolidWorks.
  • Collaborate with customers to understand manufacturing processes, identify challenges, and develop the design of electric, pneumatic, and/or hydraulic motion systems.
  • Research, evaluate, and specify new components, subsystems, and technologies to support custom machine designs.
  • Perform engineering calculations, design validation, structural analysis, and feasibility assessments to ensure reliable machine performance.
  • Support project quoting and proposal development by creating conceptual designs, estimating technical requirements, and evaluating project scope.
  • Work closely with manufacturing, assembly, controls engineering, vendors, and customers to ensure successful project execution and delivery.

Qualifications:

  • Project Management Experience Preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in machine design, automation, capital equipment, or custom machinery engineering; 10+ years preferred.
  • Previous engineering leadership or management experience with responsibility for project execution and team development.
  • Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks, including complex assemblies, machine layouts, and manufacturing drawings.
  • Strong experience with custom machine design, automation systems, robotics integration, and industrial equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform engineering calculations, structural analysis, and design validation.
  • Experience interfacing directly with customers to define requirements, develop concepts, and deliver engineered solutions.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, project management, and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Education & Certifications:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline or equivalent work experience. Advanced degree is a plus.
