Job description

Location: San Juan, Puerto Rico. This role requires associates to be in-office1 - 2days per week, fostering collaboration and connectivity, while providing flexibility to support productivity and work-life balance. This approach combines structured office engagement with the autonomy of virtual work, promoting a dynamic and adaptable workplace.

TheIndustrial Engineering (IE) Intern - MSO Operations & Strategic Projectswill be responsible for supporting MSO operational performance and strategic initiatives by documenting and improving key processes, developing SOPs/standard work, analyzing operational data, and helping implement solutions that improve quality, cost, delivery, and customer/member/provider experience.

How you will make an impact:

  • Create process maps/flow chartsfor key MSO workflows (current-state and future-state) using standard IE tools (swim lanes, decision points, handoffs), and validates maps through stakeholder interviews and observation/shadowing.
  • Develop and update SOPs / standard work(step-by-step procedures, roles & responsibilities, checklists, job aids, escalation paths) to improve consistency, quality, and training effectiveness.
  • Identify waste and root causesusing Lean/IE problem-solving methods (5 Whys, fishbone/Ishikawa, Pareto, spaghetti diagrams, value stream mapping) and translates findings into improvement recommendations.
  • Conduct time studies and workload analysisto quantify cycle times, wait times, touch time, rework, and staffing impacts; summarizes findings for leadership.
  • Build performance reporting and dashboardsto monitor operational KPIs (throughput, backlog, SLA compliance, aging, productivity, error rates) and supports ongoing performance reviews.
  • Support process improvement pilotsby defining measures of success, documenting changes, training stakeholders on new workflows, and tracking pre/post results.
  • Facilitate working sessionswith cross-functional partners to capture requirements, confirm process steps, and align on future-state design.
  • Create "control plans"to sustain improvements (process ownership, audit steps, metric monitoring cadence, and continuous feedback loops).
  • Maintain project documentation(charters, timelines, RAID logs, meeting notes, decision logs) and contributes to strategic initiative deliverables and executive-ready updates.

Functions OR examples of projects for this role:(optional, can be great for project-based duties)

  • Key Process Mapping & SOP Build (Intake-to-Resolution):
    Observe a frontline workflow end-to-end (e.g., request intake triage work completion closure). Deliverables include a validated swimlane process map, pain point summary, and an updated SOP + job aid/checklist.
  • Handoff & Rework Reduction Project:
    Map handoffs between teams (Operations, Clinical, Vendor, Finance). Identify rework drivers and design future-state routing rules; implement and measure rework reduction.
  • Cycle Time & Bottleneck Analysis:
    Conduct a time study on a high-volume process, quantify wait vs. touch time, and recommend changes (queue management, standard work, workload balancing).
  • Standard Work & Training Toolkit:
    Convert tribal knowledge into standardized documentation (SOPs, quick-reference guides, decision trees) and propose a training/onboarding plan for new team members.
  • Dashboard & KPI Definition:
    Partner with MSO leaders to define operational KPIs; build a weekly dashboard (Excel/Power BI) and data dictionary; document metric logic and ownership.

Minimum Requirements:(includes degree/experience requirements, shift hours, required certs, etc.)

  • Ability to work a minimum of40 hours per week, 8 hours per day
  • Currently enrolledin an accredited college/university pursuing aBachelor's degree in Industrial Engineeringor a closely related field (Systems Engineering, Operations, Supply Chain, Business Analytics).
  • Students must beauthorized to work in the U.S.without future visa sponsorship requirements.

Preferred Skills, Capabilities and Experiences:(all skills you would like to see that are not required)

  • Experience completingprocess maps / flow charts(swimlane diagrams, SIPOC, value stream maps) using tools such asVisio, Lucidchart, Miro, or PowerPoint.
  • Experience writing and maintainingSOPs / standard workand translating process steps into clear documentation (checklists, decision trees, scripts, FAQs).
  • Exposure toLean / Six Sigmamethods (coursework or project experience; Yellow Belt a plus).
