What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Engineering Development Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engineering Development Technician, you need a solid background in electronics, mechanical systems, and troubleshooting, typically supported by an associate degree or technical certification in engineering technology. Proficiency with CAD software, electronic testing equipment, and familiarity with industry standards like ISO or IPC is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help technicians excel in collaborative environments. These skills ensure accurate prototype development, efficient testing, and successful support of engineering teams throughout product lifecycles.

What is an Engineering Development Technician?

An Engineering Development Technician is a professional who supports engineers in designing, developing, testing, and refining products or systems. They are involved in setting up experiments, assembling prototypes, collecting data, and troubleshooting technical issues. Their work bridges the gap between engineering concepts and practical application, ensuring that projects progress efficiently from design to implementation. Engineering Development Technicians typically work in industries like manufacturing, electronics, automotive, or aerospace, and collaborate closely with engineers, designers, and quality assurance teams.

What is the difference between Engineering Development Technician vs Manufacturing Technician?

AspectEngineering Development TechnicianManufacturing Technician
CredentialsAssociate's/Bachelor's degree in engineering or related fieldHigh school diploma or technical certification, some technical training
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, R&D facilities, product development settingsManufacturing floors, assembly lines, production facilities
Job FocusDeveloping prototypes, testing new designs, supporting engineering projectsOperating machinery, maintaining production, quality control
Common UsageUsed in industries like aerospace, automotive, electronicsUsed across manufacturing sectors like consumer goods, industrial equipment

Engineering Development Technicians primarily focus on product development and testing in R&D environments, requiring engineering knowledge. Manufacturing Technicians work on production lines, ensuring manufacturing processes run smoothly. While both roles support manufacturing, their environments and responsibilities differ significantly.

What are some typical challenges faced by Engineering Development Technicians, and how can they be managed effectively?

Engineering Development Technicians often encounter challenges such as adapting to rapidly changing project requirements, troubleshooting prototype issues, and coordinating with engineers and other technical staff. Managing these challenges effectively involves strong problem-solving skills, flexibility, and clear communication with team members. Staying organized and documenting test results thoroughly can also help ensure smooth collaboration and project progress.

Job description

The future of aerospace and defense starts here.

Ursa Major was founded to revolutionize how America and its allies access and apply high-performance propulsion, from hypersonics to solid rocket motors, satellite maneuvering and launch. We design and deliver propulsion and defense systems that solve the most urgent and critical national security demands.

As Ursa Major expands into the realm of solid propulsion, we're assembling the most innovative and nimble team to unseat the reigning players. We're applying the latest technologies to an outdated business model that improves cost, lead time, and flexibility without impacting reliability. We must continue to build in-house capabilities in energetics, ballistics, and composites with an emphasis on novel designs focused on manufacturability and high-rate scalability.

Success in this role requires a safety-first approach, a willingness and desire to learn and an attention to detail mindset. As a part of the development technician team, you will be a key component of the energetics manufacturing process. You will be responsible for the production and transportation/storage of energetic materials.

As a development technician, you will be responsible for identifying process improvements and solving problems as they appear. Ability to provide engineers and other operations team members with valuable feedback will allow for quick scalability and growth

Roles and Responsibilities

The technician will also perform full-scale mixes for new programs/new formulations as they are introduced to the site. The technician is responsible for requisitioning and organizing the materials and processing required for the mix, as well as cleaning and maintaining full scale mix equipment. Technician will perform these duties under the general direction of engineer and the team supervisor, using established, well-defined methods and calculations.
  • Milling โ€“ The technician will assemble mills and mill materials for full-scale propellant mixes and weigh material bins to correct weight for propellant mixing. Technician is responsible for disassembly, cleaning, and re-assembly of full-scale milling equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned - Such as but not limited to: AP prep for milling, final assembly of prototype energetic articles, development sample preparation, and support of new production initiatives and schedules.
  • Maintaining a clean and organized space that passes FOD critical standards.
  • Able to follow and develop a preventative maintenance schedule with the assistance of engineering or chief technician.
  • Willing and available to work other shifts or overtime as needed to meet production schedules.
  • Able to work from elevated platforms, ascend ladders, and transport 35 lbs. repetitively.
  • Medically cleared to wear a respirator and operate powered industrial vehicle (and obtain company issued license as appropriate).

Required Qualifications

  • A safety-oriented mindset with a high focus on quality and production processes
  • Attention to detail and situational awareness
  • Experience working with hazardous chemicals beyond standard solvents and cleaners
