What is engineering design?

Engineering design is a systematic, creative process used by engineers to develop solutions to technical problems. It involves defining a problem, researching requirements, brainstorming ideas, creating prototypes, testing, and refining solutions to meet specific needs. The process often includes considering factors such as safety, cost, functionality, and sustainability. Engineering design is fundamental in creating products, systems, and structures used in everyday life.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in engineering design, and why are they important?

To thrive in Engineering Design, a strong background in mathematics, physics, and engineering principles is essential, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with CAD software, simulation tools, and knowledge of industry standards or certifications like PE (Professional Engineer) are typically required. Creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration are vital soft skills that help drive innovative solutions and effective teamwork. These skills and qualifications are crucial for producing safe, efficient, and high-quality engineering designs that meet client and regulatory requirements.

How do engineering design professionals typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

Engineering design professionals often work closely with teams such as manufacturing, quality assurance, procurement, and project management throughout the project lifecycle. Effective collaboration ensures that design specifications are feasible, cost-effective, and meet safety and regulatory standards. This usually involves regular meetings, design reviews, and clear communication channels to address feedback or constraints from various stakeholders. Such cross-functional teamwork is crucial to successfully translating concepts into functional, manufacturable products.

What is the difference between Engineering Design vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectEngineering DesignMechanical Engineering
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, design certificationsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, PE license
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, CAD labsManufacturing plants, labs, fieldwork
Industry UsageProduct development, CAD modelingMechanical systems, machinery
Common Search IntentDesign processes, CAD toolsMechanical systems, thermodynamics

Engineering Design focuses on creating and developing product concepts using CAD and design principles, often working in design offices. Mechanical Engineering covers a broader scope, including analysis, manufacturing, and testing of mechanical systems. While both roles require engineering degrees, Mechanical Engineers often hold professional licenses and work in diverse environments like manufacturing and testing facilities. Understanding these differences helps job seekers find roles aligned with their skills and career goals.

What does an engineering design engineer do?

An engineering design engineer develops, analyzes, and improves product or system designs using engineering principles and CAD software. They collaborate with teams to ensure designs meet specifications, safety standards, and manufacturing requirements, often working within project deadlines and budgets.

What jobs can you get with engineering design?

Engineering design skills can lead to roles such as mechanical engineer, civil engineer, electrical engineer, product designer, or CAD technician. These jobs typically require proficiency with design software, technical knowledge, and problem-solving abilities, often within manufacturing, construction, or technology industries.

Job description

Job Description About the Role Pinnacle Partners is recruiting for a Design Engineer on behalf of a client in Greenwood, Indiana. We are seeking a design professional to develop custom pressure vessels, tanks, and related components in a hands-on manufacturing environment. This role will focus on using SolidWorks and AutoCAD to develop detailed designs and engineering drawings while working closely with customers, production teams, and shop floor personnel to ensure practical, manufacturable solutions.

Key Responsibilities: Design custom ASME Section VIII pressure vessels, tanks, and components for HVAC, industrial, and municipal applications. Create detailed 2D drawings and 3D models using SolidWorks. Use AutoCAD to generate DXF files for shell cuts and factory machining processes.

Develop designs based on customer specifications, pressure and temperature requirements, and applicable engineering standards. Perform and update calculations related to pressure, temperature, thickness, and stress using specialized ASME software. Update dimensions, notes, drawings, and other engineering documentation as designs progress.

Create and utilize Bills of Materials (BOMs) and work within an ERP system. Communicate directly with customers through drawing submittals and address technical questions regarding designs. Collaborate closely with production and shop floor personnel to ensure designs are manufacturable and meet quality requirements.

Provide technical support and answer questions from shop floor personnel in a hands-on manufacturing environment. Maintain accurate documentation and traceability throughout the design and fabrication process. Design vessels ranging from small components to large custom tanks for air/water separators, filters, bladder tanks, HVAC systems, and filtration applications.

Support engineering and manufacturing teams with outsourced fabrication and other projects as needed. Requirements: 5-8 years of experience in a Design Engineering, Mechanical Design, or related role. Associate degree or higher in Engineering, Design, or a related discipline.

Strong experience using SolidWorks for 3D modeling and mechanical design. Experience creating and utilizing Bills of Materials (BOMs). Experience working with an ERP or similar manufacturing system.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to work effectively in a hands-on manufacturing environment.

Strong communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with customers, engineering teams, production, and shop floor personnel. Curious mindset with a willingness to ask questions, learn, and understand how products are fabricated. Preferred: Previous experience working in a fabrication or metal manufacturing environment.

Experience designing structural or metal assemblies. Experience designing tanks or pressure vessels. Experience with ASME standards, particularly ASME Section VIII.

Familiarity with welding, machinery, and other fabrication processes. Experience in HVAC, industrial equipment, filtration, or similar manufacturing environments. Experience working directly with shop floor personnel in a manufacturing environment.

Benefits Overview: Competitive base salary of approximately $70,000 to $90,000. Monday-Friday schedule, 7:00 AM-4:00 PM. Monthly bonus program based on company shipping goals.
