What is engineering design?

Engineering design is a systematic, creative process used by engineers to develop solutions to technical problems. It involves defining a problem, researching requirements, brainstorming ideas, creating prototypes, testing, and refining solutions to meet specific needs. The process often includes considering factors such as safety, cost, functionality, and sustainability. Engineering design is fundamental in creating products, systems, and structures used in everyday life.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Engineering Design, and why are they important?

To thrive in Engineering Design, a strong background in mathematics, physics, and engineering principles is essential, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with CAD software, simulation tools, and knowledge of industry standards or certifications like PE (Professional Engineer) are typically required. Creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration are vital soft skills that help drive innovative solutions and effective teamwork. These skills and qualifications are crucial for producing safe, efficient, and high-quality engineering designs that meet client and regulatory requirements.

How do engineering design professionals typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

Engineering design professionals often work closely with teams such as manufacturing, quality assurance, procurement, and project management throughout the project lifecycle. Effective collaboration ensures that design specifications are feasible, cost-effective, and meet safety and regulatory standards. This usually involves regular meetings, design reviews, and clear communication channels to address feedback or constraints from various stakeholders. Such cross-functional teamwork is crucial to successfully translating concepts into functional, manufacturable products.

What is the difference between Engineering Design vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectEngineering DesignMechanical Engineering
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, design certificationsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, PE license
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, CAD labsManufacturing plants, labs, fieldwork
Industry UsageProduct development, CAD modelingMechanical systems, machinery
Common Search IntentDesign processes, CAD toolsMechanical systems, thermodynamics

Engineering Design focuses on creating and developing product concepts using CAD and design principles, often working in design offices. Mechanical Engineering covers a broader scope, including analysis, manufacturing, and testing of mechanical systems. While both roles require engineering degrees, Mechanical Engineers often hold professional licenses and work in diverse environments like manufacturing and testing facilities. Understanding these differences helps job seekers find roles aligned with their skills and career goals.

Job description

Are you ready to build America's energy future? Form Energy is an American manufacturing and energy technology company. We're revolutionizing energy storage with cost-effective, multi-day technology designed to keep the electric grid secure and reliable, even during extended periods of stress. By strengthening the electric system and reimagining what's possible, we're giving clean energy a whole new form!

In recent years, Form Energy has earned a number of accolades, including being named by TIME as a "Best Invention", MIT Technology Review as a "Top Climate Tech Company To Watch", and Fast Company as "One of the Next Big Things In Tech". We are making rapid progress on our mission of delivering energy storage for a better world, and our team is growing just as rapidly to meet demand. We have signed contracts with leading electric utilities across the United States and production of our iron-air batteries is underway at our first high-volume manufacturing facility in West Virginia.

Working for Form Energy is more than just a job, it's a chance to be part of something extraordinary. And now - right as we significantly scale up battery manufacturing - might be the most exciting moment in the company's history to join. We are assembling a team of highly talented and driven individuals across the country. Driven by our core values of humanity, excellence, and creativity, our team is determined to deliver on our mission and transform the energy landscape for the better.

Feeling energized to make a meaningful impact on the world? Then keep reading - you've come to the right place.

Role Description

We are seeking an exceptional Design Manager to lead the design and execution of our first-of-its-kind battery factory. Working closely with senior leadership, you will connect the dots between engineering, manufacturing, construction, and operations to keep our highest-priority timelines on track. This is a true blank-slate opportunity. By applying first-principles thinking, you will help us treat Form Factory as a fully integrated product, ultimately enabling the most advanced high-volume battery manufacturing facility in the world.

Relocation assistance is available.

What you'll do:
  • Be the bridge between factory engineering / production and the facility design team.

  • Manage the change request process from the inputs phase through design acceptance.

  • Vet and organize all of the project requirements and documentation.

  • Facilitate communication between all team members.

  • Create and manage the design schedule for each project.

  • Track the status and open items for each project. Unblock issues slowing down the project to stay on schedule.

  • Hold all team members accountable for completing their required tasks.

  • Organize design review meetings: set the agenda, take notes, assign action items, and verify completion of the tasks.

  • Manage the contract for design consultants: write RFPs for design service, hold touch base meetings, approve invoices, track performance, ect.

  • File design related drawings, specs, reports, and similar information in Procore.

  • Collaborate with procurement and the project manager for execution to determine the most

What you'll bring:
  • 5+ years of engineering experience on manufacturing and industrial projects from concept to delivery.

  • Expertise in factory design, manufacturing, material flow and construction.

  • Advanced project management skills and demonstrated application of project and program management fundamentals to complex engineering problems.

  • Excellent communication and documentation skills with the ability to understand complex problems and distill the message into a clear plan.

  • Outstanding organizational, communication, leadership, interpersonal and decision-making abilities.

  • Experience managing conflicting objectives and compressed timelines within complex industrial project execution.

  • Exceptional drive, sense of ownership and resourcefulness.

  • Positive mindset and a passion for manufacturing infrastructure.

  • Thrives under pressure and in ambiguous environments.

Where you'll work:

This role is based at Form Factory 1 in Weirton, WV-an easy commute from the city of Pittsburgh, PA. This 550,000-square-foot facility is our hub for high-volume battery production and a leader in the new era of American energy manufacturing. Relocation assistance is available.
