What is engineering design?

Engineering design is a systematic, creative process used by engineers to develop solutions to technical problems. It involves defining a problem, researching requirements, brainstorming ideas, creating prototypes, testing, and refining solutions to meet specific needs. The process often includes considering factors such as safety, cost, functionality, and sustainability. Engineering design is fundamental in creating products, systems, and structures used in everyday life.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Engineering Design, and why are they important?

To thrive in Engineering Design, a strong background in mathematics, physics, and engineering principles is essential, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with CAD software, simulation tools, and knowledge of industry standards or certifications like PE (Professional Engineer) are typically required. Creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration are vital soft skills that help drive innovative solutions and effective teamwork. These skills and qualifications are crucial for producing safe, efficient, and high-quality engineering designs that meet client and regulatory requirements.

How do engineering design professionals typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

Engineering design professionals often work closely with teams such as manufacturing, quality assurance, procurement, and project management throughout the project lifecycle. Effective collaboration ensures that design specifications are feasible, cost-effective, and meet safety and regulatory standards. This usually involves regular meetings, design reviews, and clear communication channels to address feedback or constraints from various stakeholders. Such cross-functional teamwork is crucial to successfully translating concepts into functional, manufacturable products.

What is the difference between Engineering Design vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectEngineering DesignMechanical Engineering
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, design certificationsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, PE license
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, CAD labsManufacturing plants, labs, fieldwork
Industry UsageProduct development, CAD modelingMechanical systems, machinery
Common Search IntentDesign processes, CAD toolsMechanical systems, thermodynamics

Engineering Design focuses on creating and developing product concepts using CAD and design principles, often working in design offices. Mechanical Engineering covers a broader scope, including analysis, manufacturing, and testing of mechanical systems. While both roles require engineering degrees, Mechanical Engineers often hold professional licenses and work in diverse environments like manufacturing and testing facilities. Understanding these differences helps job seekers find roles aligned with their skills and career goals.

This role independently performs standard electrical engineering techniques and procedures while applying professional judgment to adapt and modify designs as needed. The Engineer receives direction on assignment objectives and complex features and is responsible for executing work using established plans, standards, and federal requirements.

This position contributes to the development of purposeful, high-quality electrical designs that support federal clients, including military, government, and mission-critical facilities. The Engineer collaborates closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver reliable, code-compliant, and constructible solutions while supporting project scope, schedule, and budget.

As part of Olsson's Federal Engineering & Design Team, this role plays an important part in delivering projects that serve national interests and improve the built environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs electrical engineering duties related to the evaluation, design, and documentation of electrical systems for small to large-scale federal projects, including power distribution, lighting, grounding, and related building systems.
  • Applies standard electrical engineering techniques, methods, and procedures to develop constructible, code-compliant designs while evaluating and proposing minor adaptations to meet project-specific needs.
  • Prepares electrical calculations, drawings, specifications, technical reports, and cost estimates in accordance with applicable codes, federal standards, and agency requirements.
  • Assists with preparation and coordination of project documents and maintains awareness of project scope, schedules, budgets, and deliverables.
  • Coordinates electrical design elements with other engineering disciplines and internal project teams to support integrated project outcomes.
  • Communicates project development and progress with project managers and may participate in coordination efforts with federal clients, contractors, and consultants.
  • Performs process design calculations, analyzes engineering data, and supports feasibility evaluations for proposed electrical systems.
  • Enters, maintains, and updates project information and documentation within Olsson's project management systems in accordance with the firm's Quality Management Program.
  • Diagnoses and assists in resolving technical design issues and supports quality assurance and quality control processes throughout project execution.
  • May provide technical guidance and oversight to less experienced engineers or technical staff as assigned.
  • Travel and participation in project charrettes, design reviews, and value engineering conferences.
  • May travel to project sites and work in varying terrain and weather conditions during different stages of construction.
Qualifications

You are passionate about:

  • Working collaboratively with others.
  • Having ownership in the work you do.
  • Using your talents to positively affect communities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with project teams and stakeholders.
  • Solid problem-solving, decision-making, and analytical skills.
  • Working knowledge of applicable electrical codes, federal standards, and regulatory requirements, with the ability to research and apply requirements as needed.
  • Advanced mathematical and analytical abilities related to electrical engineering design.
  • Working knowledge of applicable design tools and technologies, such as AutoCAD and Revit.

Why join us:

  • Contribute to projects that serve national interests and make a difference in communities.
  • Enjoy flexible work arrangements, including remote options, to support your work-life balance.
  • Thrive in a supportive culture that values professional development and teamwork.

At Olsson, your expertise drives progress on projects that matter. If you're passionate about federal engineering and ready to elevate your career, we want to hear from you.
