What jobs can you get with engineering design?

Engineering design skills can lead to roles such as mechanical engineer, civil engineer, electrical engineer, product designer, or CAD technician. These positions involve creating, analyzing, and improving engineering systems or products, often requiring proficiency with design software and relevant certifications. Job responsibilities vary across industries like manufacturing, construction, and technology.

What is engineering design?

Engineering design is a systematic, creative process used by engineers to develop solutions to technical problems. It involves defining a problem, researching requirements, brainstorming ideas, creating prototypes, testing, and refining solutions to meet specific needs. The process often includes considering factors such as safety, cost, functionality, and sustainability. Engineering design is fundamental in creating products, systems, and structures used in everyday life.

What does an engineering design engineer do?

An engineering design engineer develops, analyzes, and improves product or system designs using engineering principles and CAD software. They collaborate with teams to ensure designs meet specifications, safety standards, and manufacturing requirements, often working within project deadlines and budgets.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in engineering design, and why are they important?

To thrive in Engineering Design, a strong background in mathematics, physics, and engineering principles is essential, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with CAD software, simulation tools, and knowledge of industry standards or certifications like PE (Professional Engineer) are typically required. Creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration are vital soft skills that help drive innovative solutions and effective teamwork. These skills and qualifications are crucial for producing safe, efficient, and high-quality engineering designs that meet client and regulatory requirements.

How do engineering design professionals typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

Engineering design professionals often work closely with teams such as manufacturing, quality assurance, procurement, and project management throughout the project lifecycle. Effective collaboration ensures that design specifications are feasible, cost-effective, and meet safety and regulatory standards. This usually involves regular meetings, design reviews, and clear communication channels to address feedback or constraints from various stakeholders. Such cross-functional teamwork is crucial to successfully translating concepts into functional, manufacturable products.

What is the difference between Engineering Design vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectEngineering DesignMechanical Engineering
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, design certificationsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, PE license
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, CAD labsManufacturing plants, labs, fieldwork
Industry UsageProduct development, CAD modelingMechanical systems, machinery
Common Search IntentDesign processes, CAD toolsMechanical systems, thermodynamics

Engineering Design focuses on creating and developing product concepts using CAD and design principles, often working in design offices. Mechanical Engineering covers a broader scope, including analysis, manufacturing, and testing of mechanical systems. While both roles require engineering degrees, Mechanical Engineers often hold professional licenses and work in diverse environments like manufacturing and testing facilities. Understanding these differences helps job seekers find roles aligned with their skills and career goals.

RH2 Engineering

$45 - $65/hr

Full-time

Job description

RH2 Engineering is seeking a motivated and collaborative Project Engineer to join our growing transportation infrastructure and public works team in our Nampa office. This is more than a technical role - it's a unique opportunity to help shape our communities, solve real-world logistics and safety challenges, and grow RH2's Idaho presence alongside a team of genuine, talented, and supportive people. You'll work alongside experienced project managers, industry leaders, and subject matter experts on projects that directly improve communities throughout Idaho and the Pacific Northwest.

At RH2, we believe great engineering comes from strong relationships, practical problem solving, and teams that genuinely enjoy working together. We value curiosity, initiative, humility, and people who feel energized by building meaningful projects with smart people. We deliver transportation, utility, water, wastewater, irrigation, and stormwater projects for public agency clients while maintaining a culture that values flexibility, mentorship, professional growth, and a healthy work-life balance.

If you enjoy solving complex infrastructure challenges, collaborating with smart and motivated people, and seeing your work move from concept through construction (potentially right next door), you'll fit right in here. We work hard, support each other, celebrate wins together, and still make time to savor solitude and life outside the office - whether in the yard with family, high on a mountain peak, or anywhere in between. We'd love to meet you!

With your skills you will:

  • Coordinate task execution with RH2 project managers and technical leads
  • Contribute to the design and CAD development of roadway, intersection, stormwater, and related transportation and public works infrastructure plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E)
  • Prepare engineering calculations and technical reports
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams across RH2's 160+ staff in all nine offices
  • Review and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and standards
  • Perform project tasks in a timely and cost-effective manner
  • Provide construction support, including reviewing submittals, responding to RFIs, and conducting site visits and observation tasks
  • Assist RH2 project managers and technical leads with client engagement and public agency representatives to support project and deliverable development and approvals
  • Collaborate with other offices to support and develop RH2 best practices and create consistency and standards to grow the transportation and public works services

What you'll bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Idaho (or ability to obtain through reciprocity)
  • 4-12 years of relevant engineering experience, specifically in transportation or public works infrastructure projects
  • Proficiency with engineering design software (e.g., AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, or similar tools)
  • Strong understanding of transportation design standards, specifications, and guidelines (e.g. ISPWC, AASHTO, PROWAG, etc.)
  • Familiarity with transportation engineering, roadway drainage systems, project delivery, and construction management fundamentals
  • Interest in working with state DOTs, counties, or municipal agencies
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Physical Requirements:

This position is primarily performed in an office/business setting, however there will be occasional site visits and field observations. To successfully perform this job, an individual should have the ability, with or without reasonable accommodation, to:

  • Perform a mix of office and field site observations.
  • Sit or stand at a desk for several hours to perform work in an office setting.
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs.

Compensation Counts:

RH2 has an excellent multi-component compensation package built to recognize and financially reward our employees' contributions throughout their career with the company. Individual base compensation will vary within the range of $45.00-$65.00/hour based on skills, qualifications, and experience as they relate to the requirements for this position. RH2 values our employees' work/life balance and compensates for overtime at 1.5 times the base rate for hours exceeding 40 regular hours in a work week. This position is eligible for RH2's performance bonus, which is equivalent to one month's pay. Time in position, and individual and company performance requirements apply.

Benefits you'll enjoy:

  • Health & Wellbeing - 100% paid insurance premiums for medical, dental, vision, life, AD&D, disability, and an employee assistance program (EAP) employee coverage. Two buy-up medical plans are available, and low-cost partner and dependent coverage offered.
  • Rest & Recover - Nine (9) paid holidays. Competitive Paid Time Off (PTO) accrual benefit.
  • Savings Plans - 401(k) retirement plan with pre-tax and after-tax contribution options, generous employer 401(k) match, employer profit sharing contribution, employer Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) contribution, HSA with an annual employer contribution, FSA, and dependent care FSA available.
  • Team Building & Community - Office social events, all-company retreat, and paid volunteer hours to encourage local community involvement and partnerships.
  • Career Recognition & Development - Service anniversary bonuses and/or additional PTO on milestone anniversaries, incentives for professional licensure, defined career progression for every discipline, and mentorship from experienced professionals. We help advance careers because we care about you.
