What is the difference between Engineer Solidworks vs Mechanical Drafter?

AspectEngineer SolidworksMechanical Drafter
CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering or related field, Solidworks certificationAssociate's degree or technical diploma, proficiency in Solidworks
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, engineering firms, manufacturing companiesDesign offices, manufacturing plants, engineering departments
ResponsibilitiesDesign, analyze, and develop 3D models and assembliesPrepare detailed technical drawings and schematics from designs

Engineer Solidworks professionals focus on designing and analyzing 3D models using Solidworks, often requiring engineering degrees. Mechanical Drafters primarily create detailed drawings based on engineers' designs. Both roles use Solidworks but differ in scope and responsibilities, with engineers involved in conceptual design and drafters in detailed documentation.

This role is highly hands-on and collaborative, working directly with assembly and production teams to refine designs, solve problems quickly, and ensure the best possible product outcomes.

The ideal candidate is comfortable moving fast, responding to real-world feedback, and iterating designs directly alongside the people assembling them.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop 3D CAD models, assemblies, and detailed drawings using SolidWorks
  • Collaborate closely with R&D engineers and assembly teams to ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, and efficient
  • Rapidly iterate designs based on prototype testing, assembly feedback, and performance requirements
  • Support the full product lifecycle from concept through prototype and into production
  • Create and maintain accurate drawings, BOMs, and revision documentation
  • Identify opportunities to improve product quality, durability, and ease of assembly
  • Apply design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and design-for-assembly (DFA) principles

Job Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Certified SolidWorks Associate (CSWA) required
  • Experience using SolidWorks in a professional, academic, or project-based setting
  • Understanding of mechanical assemblies and basic manufacturing processes
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, iterative environment
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in R&D or product development environments
  • Exposure to manufacturing, assembly, or prototyping work
  • Familiarity with GD&T and tolerance fundamentals
  • Technical degree or equivalent hands-on experience

Salary:

  • Salary will be determined based on experience and qualifications
