Energy Modelling information

What is energy modelling?

Energy modelling is the process of creating mathematical representations of energy systems to analyze their performance, efficiency, and environmental impact. It is commonly used in building design, urban planning, and energy policy to predict future energy consumption, optimize system design, and evaluate the potential of renewable energy sources. Energy modellers use specialized software to simulate factors like heating, cooling, lighting, and equipment usage, helping stakeholders make informed decisions about energy management and sustainability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an energy modeller, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Energy Modeller, you need a solid background in engineering, mathematics, or environmental science, along with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Familiarity with energy modelling software such as EnergyPlus, eQUEST, or IES VE, and knowledge of relevant certifications like LEED or ASHRAE standards are typically required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams are essential soft skills. These competencies are critical for accurately predicting energy performance, optimizing building efficiency, and meeting sustainability goals.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in energy modelling roles, and how can they be addressed?

Energy modelling professionals often encounter challenges such as handling large and complex datasets, ensuring the accuracy of input assumptions, and adapting models to new technologies or regulatory requirements. Collaborating closely with engineers, architects, and policymakers is essential to gather reliable data and keep models relevant. Staying current with industry software, continuous learning, and participating in professional networks can help address these challenges and improve model robustness.

What is the difference between Energy Modelling vs Energy Analyst?

AspectEnergy ModellingEnergy Analyst
Required CredentialsDegree in engineering, environmental science, or related field; certifications like LEED AP or energy modeling software trainingDegree in similar fields; certifications may include energy auditing or data analysis
Work EnvironmentTypically in engineering firms, consulting companies, or energy agencies; focused on technical modelingIn corporate, government, or consulting settings; involves data analysis and reporting
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by engineers, consultants, and architects for building performance and energy efficiency projectsEmployed by energy companies, government agencies, and consultancies for energy management and policy analysis

While both roles involve energy data, Energy Modelling focuses on creating detailed simulations of energy systems, whereas Energy Analysts interpret data to inform decisions. The roles often overlap but differ mainly in technical depth and scope.

Youย will be a part of an integrated and growing team of utility renewable focused practitioners that cross disciplines in a holistic service offering inclusive of electrical & power engineers, civil engineers, and energy and sustainability consultants.ย ย

The ideal candidate should have experience performing renewable energy detailed design and related studies, with a focus on solar photovoltaic systems, wind energy, battery storage, and substations.ย Additionally, the individual will perform various analytical studies related to power systems design such as grounding, short circuit, load flow, and cable ampacity.ย

The candidate will be expected to contribute to current work and collaborate with other disciplines to deliver quality deliverables and client outcomes.

The opportunity

  • Prepare and review the electrical design of Solar PV and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facilities, including single line diagrams, site layout, medium voltage (MV) collection systems, communication schematics, and associated electrical studies.
  • Conduct and review engineering calculations such as grounding/earthing studies, short-circuit analysis, cable ampacity sizing, load flow analysis, and AC/DC voltage drop calculations.
  • Size and optimize DC cable routes for solar arrays, including string sizing, routing from modules to combiner boxes/disconnect switches, and cable tray/conduit planning.
  • Support in the development of solar plant design packages, including DC/AC electrical single-line diagrams, cable schedules, equipment specifications, and construction-ready drawings.
  • Develop detailed BESS plant design packages.
  • Perform energy production estimates, system performance modelling, and techno-economic evaluations
  • Support interconnection studies and protection coordination activities as needed.
  • Contribute to studies of front-of-the-meter and behind-the-meter microgrid facilities, including planning, design, and interconnection.
  • Demonstrate willingness to expand capabilities into substation design, protection, and power system studies associated withย utility-scale solar and BESS interconnections.
  • Provide engineering markups and technical direction to designers and drafters in the development of substation and data center MV interconnection layouts.
  • Provide guidance to the design team regarding applicable electrical codes, utility standards, and industrial design practices during the development of electrical arrangement layouts.
  • Strong knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code, CSA standards and utility design requirements.
  • Lead design coordination meetings and provide day to day technical direction to designers and drafters.
  • Experience developing utility interconnection substations, collector substations, Mv distribution systems, or data center electrical infrastructure is considered an asset.
