Job description

Position Overview

Harris Energy Solutions, LLC (HES) is a nationwide Energy Consulting Services firm. HES offers a full suite of consulting services, including Building Energy Modeling, Renewable Energy Consulting, Master Planning, Energy Audit, Building Commissioning, Measurement and Verification, and Building Retro-Commissioning. We pride ourselves on the work we perform and the services we provide. HES is hiring an Energy Engineer specializing in Energy Modeling to join our team.

The Energy Engineer (Energy Modeling) will perform whole-building energy simulations to support design decisions, code compliance, certification programs, and decarbonization planning. This role focuses on accurate, well-documented building energy models that translate design intent into actionable energy and cost insights.

Responsibilities

  • Perform Whole-Building Energy Modeling: Develop baseline and proposed energy models in eQUEST, OpenStudio/EnergyPlus, IES-VE, Trane TRACE 3D Plus, or Carrier HAP for new construction, major renovation, and retrofit projects.
  • Drawing and Specification Review: Review architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and envelope documents to identify model inputs, including geometry, constructions, occupancy, lighting, plug loads, HVAC systems, and operating schedules.
  • Code Compliance and Certification Modeling: Produce ASHRAE 90.1 Appendix G performance-path models, IECC compliance models, and certification submissions for LEED EAp2/EAc1, ENERGY STAR, Passive House, and similar programs.
  • Support Local Decarbonization Compliance: Develop models supporting compliance with local laws and stretch codes (e.g., NYC Local Law 97, Title 24, Boston BERDO, Washington Clean Buildings Act).
  • Parametric and Design Optimization Studies: Run parametric analyses on envelope, HVAC systems, controls, and renewable energy options; quantify life-cycle cost and carbon impacts to support design decisions.
  • Calibrate Existing Building Models: Calibrate energy models against utility billing or interval data per ASHRAE Guideline 14 standards for retro-commissioning, deep retrofit, and ESPC projects.
  • Renewable Energy Modeling: Support photovoltaic, solar thermal, geothermal, and battery storage modeling using tools such as PVsyst, SAM, and integrated simulation tools.
  • Generate Technical Reports: Author energy modeling reports, narratives, and exhibits suitable for clients, design teams, certification reviewers, and authorities having jurisdiction.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's in engineering (Mechanical, Architectural, Electrical, or Facilities) or Building Science
  • 1-3 years of energy modeling experience, including at least one internship, co-op, or full-time role
  • Hands-on experience with at least one of: eQUEST, OpenStudio/EnergyPlus, IES-VE, Trane TRACE 3D Plus, or Carrier HAP
  • Working knowledge of ASHRAE 90.1 (especially Appendix G), ASHRAE 62.1, and applicable energy codes (IECC, Title 24, state stretch codes)
  • Understanding of HVAC system types, controls, building envelope, and renewable systems
  • Familiarity with LEED energy modeling submission requirements preferred
  • Strong Excel skills; experience with Python, Ruby, or scripting against modeling tools is a plus
  • Experience with large commercial and multi-family buildings preferred but not necessary
  • EIT, BEMP, CEM, or LEED AP BD+C credential preferred (or willingness to obtain)
  • Travel throughout the United States as required by project workload

Personal Qualifications

  • Strong analytical, writing, and presentation skills
  • Passionate about mitigating climate change
  • Collaborative and a strong team player
  • Self-motivated with the ability to multitask and pay attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Enthusiasm to learn and grow as a professional

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without the need for current or future employer-sponsored work authorization
