Job Summary
The Energy Specialist is responsible for utility billing payment, utility connections, analyzing energy utilization, energy savings, and other environmentally sustainable initiatives. In alignment with the District's policy Article VII.E.1, the position works collaboratively to develop and implement a district-wide energy-saving strategy. Emphasis is placed on achievable technological changes and educating faculty and staff across departments and schools to encourage behavioral changes that maximize energy and monetary savings.
Essential Functions
 








  • Reviews and audits all utility bills for accuracy and inputs and oversees data entry to the district's utility database.
  • Analyzes energy bills to determine billing errors and then negotiates with the utility companies' representatives to correct the billings.  
  • Oversees and maintains the district's utility database program.  Regularly monitors and audits energy and water consumption data to ensure accuracy, identifies usage trends, and identifies opportunities to optimize resource use and reduce expenditures.
  • Analyzes energy utilization patterns to help develop a plan of action to maximize the reduction of energy expenditures in highest usage facilities.
  • Works with the district's maintenance personnel to coordinate the programming and maintenance of the building's occupancy schedule (Occupied/Unoccupied modes) for the district's facilities.  This will be accomplished using the school's existing Building Management System (BMS).
  • Implements energy plan by persuading principals, teachers, and other staff to follow the guidelines set forth in the plan.
  • Generates and submits applications for energy conservation grants and incentives.
  • Implements energy plan by implementing building management systems to limit superfluous energy consumption.
  • Monitors progress of the energy plan by audit and observation.
  • Educates employees about the benefits of maximizing energy efficiencies and money-saving ideas in multiple schools.
  • Establishes and maintains good working relationships with principals, teachers, and other staff to facilitate behavioral change needed for maximum energy conservation.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with local and corporate energy representatives including the National Energy Foundation and the state and federal Departments of Energy to utilize incentive programs and other energy-saving strategies.
  • Promotes energy and water conservation throughout District facilities by educating and working with employees and students to increase awareness of conservation efforts and encourage individual responsibility for the economical and efficient use of District resources.

Required Knowledge and Skills
 

  • Working knowledge and programming experience with Building Management Systems.
  • Knowledge of energy conservation and its effect on utility costs.
  • Ability to understand and implement energy and money saving strategies.
  • Must keep abreast of industry trends, especially new energy saving strategies.
  • Must be willing to learn utility rate structure, electrical systems, heating, ventilating, air conditioning and control systems.
  • Ability to communicate well with internal and external personnel regarding projects.
  • Working knowledge of computer software programs such as Microsoft Office Suite programs, Microsoft Project or other industry standard scheduling software, Google Doc platform, etc.
  • Must have a demonstrated aptitude for auditing, and cost/consumption accounting.
  • Must be self-motivated and organized to accomplish measurable objectives.
  • Must have ability to work independently and produce meaningful results.


Required Education, Training and Qualifications

  • Requires one of the following:
    • a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a major in environmental studies, sustainability, public administration, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, construction management, or other closely related field and two years of professional work experience in an associated field;
    • an associate's degree and five years of progressive responsibility in energy management, HVAC, building management systems, building control systems, or building electrical systems; or
    • a high school diploma and ten years of progressive responsibility in energy management, HVAC, building management systems, building control systems, or building electrical systems.
  • Valid Utah driver's license.


Note: The District reserves the right to make specific requirements for this position, however, when prior work experience has been evaluated to be particularly pertinent, some exchanges between training and experience might be authorized.
Assigned Decision Making
The Energy Specialist works collaboratively with coworkers and the Engineering Services Manager to develop energy policies to be used throughout the District. Must be able to assess results quickly and change course if necessary, to reach desired objectives.
Non-Supervisory Interaction
Effective interaction with Principals, teachers, custodians, and other staff are essential to the success of the Energy Specialist.  The incumbent works closely with other Energy Specialists and the Engineering Services Manager.  The incumbent interacts closely with the public utility company representatives and state and federal agencies.

  • Work takes place in a typical school or office environment.
  • Monitoring utility activities throughout the district requires the incumbent to travel in all types of weather and air quality.
  • The flow of work is steady with pressure to complete work tasks with intermittent interruptions.
  • Must work some nights, weekends, and holidays.
