About the job

Why You’ll Love This Role

  • Lead with influence – Your expertise will shape energy conservation standards and system optimization strategies used across hundreds of facilities nationwide.
  • See real impact – Your decisions directly reduce energy waste, lower operating costs, and improve occupant comfort in schools, universities, and large institutions.
  • Blend strategy with hands‑on engineering – This role goes beyond design. You’ll guide controls, HVAC optimization, commissioning, and long‑term performance improvements.
  • Work with purpose – Join a mission‑driven company that has already saved clients $7.3 billion in energy costs — with a bold goal to double that impact in the next five years.
  • Be the technical authority – Serve as a trusted advisor to clients, internal teams, and leadership on complex mechanical and building systems challenges.

About Cenergistic® Cenergistic is a nationally recognized, technology‑powered energy conservation company with more than 40 years of proven success. We help organizations reduce purchased utility costs, optimize building performance, and foster a culture of conservation. Our proprietary, data‑driven energy management platform—paired with a people‑first, behavior‑based implementation process—delivers measurable savings, healthier buildings, and long‑term operational excellence across thousands of client sites nationwide.

The Opportunity Cenergistic is seeking a Building Systems Engineer with deep experience in HVAC systems, building automation, and energy performance optimization. In this role, you will provide technical leadership, guide best practices, and serve as a senior engineering resource supporting energy conservation initiatives across commercial and institutional facilities. This role is ideal for an experienced engineer who enjoys mentoring others, solving complex system‑level problems, and influencing outcomes at scale.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the development and implementation of energy conservation standards, protocols, and best practices for healthcare buildings.
  • Serve as a senior technical authority for HVAC, mechanical, and building automation system optimization.
  • Review, refine, and approve control strategies and sequences of operation to maximize energy efficiency and system performance.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex HVAC, mechanical, and BAS issues using historical and real‑time performance data.
  • Provide technical leadership for commissioning, retro‑commissioning, and measurement & verification efforts.
  • Collaborate with field engineering teams, controls specialists, client managers, and facilities leadership to drive performance improvements.
  • Support capital planning, system upgrades, and ROI analysis for client energy initiatives.
  • Prepare and present technical assessments, performance reports, and strategic recommendations to internal leadership and clients.
  • Mentor and train engineers, energy specialists, and technical staff on HVAC systems, controls, and energy optimization strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable codes, regulations, safety requirements, and industry standards.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, vendors, and regulatory stakeholders.
  • Anticipated travel: 5–8%

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, Electrical or Energy Engineering or related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience in HVAC engineering, building HVAC systems, energy conservation, or related engineering disciplines.
  • Advanced knowledge of commercial HVAC systems, including chillers, boilers, air handlers, VFDs, VRF systems, and hydronic systems.
  • Extensive experience with building automation systems and controls platforms (e.g., Tridium/Niagara, Trane, Carrier, Johnson Controls, Siemens, ALC).
  • Proven success optimizing mechanical systems using controls strategies, analytics, and energy management techniques.
  • Strong experience with ROI modeling, energy performance analysis, and capital justification.
  • Ability to review and interpret mechanical drawings, control diagrams, sequences of operation, and BAS graphics.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence senior stakeholders, clients, and cross‑functional teams.
  • Ability to work independently while providing leadership and technical direction to others.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
  • Commissioning or retro‑commissioning experience.
  • Measurement & verification or energy accounting experience.
  • Project management and team leadership experience.
  • Experience in large commercial, institutional, or campus environments.

Why Cenergistic

  • National platform with local impact.
  • Long‑term growth and stability in the energy conservation industry.
  • Opportunity to influence engineering strategy, not just execute tasks.
  • Work alongside passionate professionals committed to sustainability and operational excellence.
