An endodontic assistant works with a specialized dentist called an endodontist. An endodontist treats problems with the tissues and pulp within the teeth. The primary dental procedure they perform is a root canal. In this job, your duties are to assist the endodontist in their practice and procedures. Your responsibilities may include scheduling patient appointments, performing x-rays, and assisting before, during, and after a root canal. During these procedures, you may clean the patient’s mouth, pass tools to the dentist, or monitor the patient’s wellbeing and comfort.
| Aspect | Endodontic Assistant | Dental Assistant |
|---|---|---|
| Certifications | Dental assisting certification, specialized endodontic training | General dental assisting certification |
| Work Environment | Endodontic clinics, specialist offices | General dental offices, clinics |
| Job Responsibilities | Assist with root canals, sterilize endodontic tools, prepare patients for procedures | Assist with various dental procedures, patient care, sterilization, and administrative tasks |
Endodontic Assistants specialize in supporting root canal treatments and work closely with endodontists, requiring specific training. Dental Assistants have broader roles across general dentistry. While both roles require certification and work in dental settings, Endodontic Assistants focus on endodontic procedures, making their skills more specialized.
