The Pediatric Endocrinology Registered Nurse provides professional nursing care, patient education, and care coordination for pediatric patients with diabetes and endocrine disorders. This role serves as a clinical resource for patients, families, providers, and the interdisciplinary care team by coordinating specialized treatment, promoting disease self-management, supporting diabetes technologies, and ensuring high-quality, patient-centered care while contributing to the organization's clinical and academic missions.

What You'll Do

General Nursing Responsibilities

Receives, prioritizes, and processes patient requests, including prescription refills, medical supplies, equipment, referrals, and urgent care needs.

Documents patient encounters accurately and timely in accordance with nursing standards, organizational policies, and regulatory requirements.

Reviews and coordinates provider orders, including prescriptions, laboratory testing, diagnostic imaging, medical equipment, and related services.

Prepares examination and treatment rooms, ensuring appropriate equipment, supplies, and documentation are available for patient care.

Performs nursing assessments and triages patient concerns via telephone, electronic communication, and in-person encounters, providing appropriate guidance and follow-up.

Obtains and documents vital signs, health histories, medication information, and other clinical data as appropriate.

Performs clinical procedures, laboratory testing, and diagnostic services within scope of practice and applicable regulatory standards.

Assists providers with examinations, procedures, treatments, and other patient care activities.

Provides patient and caregiver education regarding diagnoses, medications, treatment plans, procedures, and preventative health measures.

Supports the educational mission of the organization through collaboration with physicians, residents, medical students, and other learners.

Maintains compliance with organizational policies, infection prevention standards, safety requirements, and quality initiatives.

Delivering exceptional customer service and promotes a positive patient experience.

Participates in quality improvement, performance improvement, and other organizational initiatives as assigned.

Additional Responsiblities

Serves as a clinical resource for pediatric patients with diabetes and endocrine disorders by providing specialized nursing care, education, and care coordination.

Educates patients and families regarding diabetes self-management, insulin administration, glucose monitoring, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems, insulin pump therapy, medications, nutrition, and disease management strategies.

Reviews blood glucose data, CGM reports, insulin pump information, laboratory results, and other clinical information to assist providers in the ongoing management of patients.

Triages urgent and non-urgent patient concerns related to diabetes and endocrine conditions, collaborating with providers to ensure timely intervention and continuity of care.

Coordinates care for patients requiring insulin pumps, CGM devices, specialty medications, durable medical equipment, and related supplies.

Processes specialty medication requests, prescription refills, prior authorizations, appeals, and coordination with pharmacies and insurance carriers.

Coordinates referrals, reviews incoming clinical information, and assists in prioritizing patients requiring urgent evaluation or specialized endocrine services.

Provides nursing visits for patient assessment, medication administration, diabetes education, growth monitoring, and provider-directed treatment plans.

Collaborates with schools, community agencies, specialty providers, pharmacies, and other healthcare professionals to support comprehensive patient care and treatment planning.

Assists with care coordination activities including patient follow-up, recall initiatives, transition planning, and quality improvement efforts to promote positive clinical outcomes.

Serves as a clinical resource for providers, residents, medical assistants, and other staff by supporting education, workflow improvement, and evidence-based nursing practice.

Maintains current knowledge of pediatric endocrinology treatments, diabetes technologies, medications, and evidence-based standards of care through continuing education.

What You'll Bring

Required:

• Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing program.
• Current and unrestricted licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
• Strong clinical assessment, communication, organizational, critical thinking, and patient education skills.
• Ability to effectively educate pediatric patients and caregivers regarding chronic disease management and treatment plans.

Preferred

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
• Minimum of two (2) years of clinical nursing experience.
• Experience in pediatric nursing, endocrinology, diabetes care, ambulatory care, or chronic disease management preferred.
• Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) credential or willingness to obtain certification
