What are EMC engineers?

EMC engineers, or Electromagnetic Compatibility engineers, are professionals who ensure that electronic devices operate without causing or being affected by electromagnetic interference. They design, test, and troubleshoot products to comply with regulations and standards that prevent unwanted electromagnetic emissions. Their work is crucial in industries such as automotive, aerospace, telecommunications, and consumer electronics, where reliable device performance is essential. EMC engineers often collaborate with design teams to implement shielding, grounding, and filtering solutions, and they help navigate compliance testing and certification processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an EMC Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, electromagnetic theory, and compliance standards, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with EMC test equipment, simulation tools like CST or HFSS, and regulatory certifications such as FCC or CE are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help address complex compliance challenges and coordinate with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure products meet regulatory standards, function without interference, and reach the market efficiently.

What is the difference between Emc vs Network Engineer?

AspectEmcNetwork Engineer
Required CertificationsEMC Certified Data Center Expert, VMware certificationsCCNA, CCNP, Cisco certifications
Work EnvironmentData centers, storage environments, enterprise ITNetwork infrastructure, routing, switching, security
Industry UsageData storage, cloud, enterprise ITTelecommunications, IT services, enterprise networks

While both roles work within enterprise IT environments, Emc specialists focus on data storage solutions and storage area networks, often requiring certifications like EMC Certified Data Center Expert. Network Engineers primarily design and maintain network infrastructure, with certifications such as CCNA or CCNP. Understanding these differences helps organizations assign the right skills to their IT teams.

What are some common challenges faced by EMC engineers when working on product compliance testing?

EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) engineers often encounter challenges such as diagnosing complex interference issues, meeting strict regulatory standards, and managing tight project deadlines. Testing can reveal unexpected emissions or susceptibility problems that require creative troubleshooting and collaboration with design teams to resolve. Additionally, keeping up with evolving international compliance requirements can add to the complexity, making attention to detail and strong communication skills essential for success in this role.

Job description

Please Note:ย To conform with the United States Government Space Technology Export Regulations, the applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., conditional resident, asylee or refugee (protected individuals as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.

Atย CesiumAstro, we are developers and pioneers of out-of-the-box communication systems for satellites, UAVs, launch vehicles, and other space and airborne platforms. We take pride in our dynamic and cross-functional work environment, which allows us to learn, develop, and engage across our organization. If you are looking for hands-on, interactive, and autonomous work, CesiumAstro is the place for you. We are actively seeking passionate, collaborative, energetic, and forward-thinking individuals to join our team.

We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced Senior EMI/EMC (Electromagnetic Interference/Electromagnetic Compatibility) Engineer I to join our engineering team in the aerospace and defense industry. The ideal candidate will play a critical role in ensuring that our phased array communication systems meet all EMI/EMC requirements and standards. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including design, test, and systems engineering, to develop, analyze, and implement EMI/EMC control strategies that ensure the integrity and performance of our products in harsh environments.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop and implement EMI/EMC control plans, including analysis of designs to identify potential interference issues and suggest mitigations.
  • Provide technical guidance to design teams on EMI/EMC considerations, ensuring that all systems comply with relevant standards and performance requirements.
  • Plan, coordinate, and conduct EMI/EMC testing for electronics modules and phased array communication systems, including preparing test plans, defining test setups, and performing tests in accordance with relevant standards (e.g., MIL-STD-461, DO-160, ECSS).
  • Utilize simulation tools (e.g., CST Studio Suite, ANSYS HFSS) to model electromagnetic fields and predict potential interference issues at the component, subsystem, and system levels.
  • Ensure that all products meet regulatory requirements and industry standards for EMI/EMC, including documentation, certification, and reporting to stakeholders.
  • Investigate and resolve EMI/EMC-related issues, including conducting root cause analysis and developing corrective actions to address non-compliance or performance shortfalls.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports and technical documentation, including test results, compliance matrices, and design guidelines for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead initiatives to improve EMI/EMC design practices, testing methodologies, and tools to enhance overall product quality and performance.
  • Mentor and train junior engineers, providing guidance on best practices in EMI/EMC design and testing.
JOB REQUIREMENTS AND MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in EMI/EMC engineering, preferably within the aerospace and defense industry.
  • Deep understanding of EMI/EMC principles, standards, and regulations (e.g., MIL-STD-461, DO-160, ECSS).
  • Experience with EMI/EMC test equipment and tools (e.g., spectrum analyzers, signal generators, antennas).
  • Proficiency in electromagnetic simulation software (e.g., CST Studio Suite, ANSYS HFSS, FEKO).
  • Knowledge of circuit and system-level design for EMI/EMC mitigation, including shielding, filtering, and grounding techniques.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
  • Experience with EMI/EMC compliance for communication systems, particularly phased arrays.
  • Strong experience in EMI/EMC test planning and execution.
  • Certification in EMI/EMC (e.g. Certified EMC Engineer).
  • Familiarity with systems engineering practices and tools (e.g. Jama, DOORS).
$120,000 - $160,500 a year
