What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an EMC engineer?

To thrive as an EMC Engineer, you need a deep understanding of electromagnetic compatibility principles, circuit design, and regulatory standards, usually backed by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with EMC testing equipment, simulation tools like CST or HFSS, and compliance certifications such as iNARTE or CISPR are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are important for conveying complex test results and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills are essential to ensure products meet regulatory requirements and operate reliably in real-world electromagnetic environments.

What does an EMC engineer do?

An EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) Engineer is responsible for ensuring that electronic devices and systems function properly in their intended environments without causing or experiencing electromagnetic interference (EMI). They conduct tests, design shielding solutions, and ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations. EMC Engineers work in various industries, including automotive, aerospace, telecommunications, and consumer electronics. Their role helps maintain device reliability, safety, and regulatory compliance.

What are some typical challenges faced by EMC engineers, and how are they addressed on the job?

EMC Engineers often face the challenge of diagnosing and mitigating unexpected electromagnetic interference (EMI) issues in complex electronic systems, especially as devices become more compact and interconnected. Troubleshooting can require creative problem-solving, running repeated tests, and collaborating closely with design, hardware, and compliance teams to identify root causes and implement effective solutions. Continuous learning is also necessary due to evolving regulatory standards and new technology trends. However, working as part of a dedicated EMC or compliance team provides valuable support and mentorship, allowing for knowledge sharing and career growth as you gain experience.

Job description

Onto Innovation is a leader in process control, combining global scale with an expanded portfolio of leading-edge technologies that include: 3D metrology spanning the chip from nanometer-scale transistors to micron-level die-interconnects; macro defect inspection of wafers and packages; metal interconnect composition; factory analytics; and lithography for advanced semiconductor packaging. Our breadth of offerings across the entire semiconductor value chain helps our customers solve their most difficult yield, device performance, quality, and reliability issues. Onto Innovation strives to optimize customers' critical path of progress by making them smarter, faster and more efficient.
Job Summary & Responsibilities
We are seeking a highly experienced Staff Electrical Engineer with broad, hands-on expertise across multiple electrical engineering disciplines to lead the development of advanced electrical systems for high-precision metrology and inspection equipment. This role requires a strong systems mindset, deep knowledge of power and noise management, motor and actuator control, and the integration of diverse electrical components into complex, high-performance platforms. The ideal candidate brings both technical depth and leadership experience-guiding engineering teams, shaping processes, and driving electrical excellence across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and oversee the design, development, integration, and validation of electrical subsystems supporting next-generation semiconductor metrology and inspection systems.
  • Architect robust electrical solutions spanning analog, digital, power electronics, motor/actuator control, signal conditioning, and mixed-signal circuitry, with an emphasis on reliability, noise reduction, long-term stability, and manufacturability.
  • Guide PCB design and development processes, including schematic oversight, layout optimization, and board bring-up, ensuring adherence to signal-integrity, power-distribution, EMI/EMC, thermal, and global safety standards.
  • Integrate multidisciplinary components, including sensors, motors, power supplies, high-precision analog elements, digital controllers, and communication interfaces into cohesive, high-performance systems.
  • Partner closely with mechanical, software, systems, and manufacturing teams to deliver well-integrated and production-ready solutions.
  • Manage and mentor engineering talent, providing technical leadership, developing best practices, running design reviews, and ensuring alignment with program and organizational goals.
  • Drive structured problem-solving, including root cause analyses of complex electrical, power, noise, and integration issues across prototype, pilot, and production phases.
  • Establish and enhance engineering processes, contributing to continuous improvement in design methodologies, documentation standards, test practices, and cross-team collaboration.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant industry and regulatory requirements (e.g., SEMI, CE, UL) throughout design and manufacturing cycles.

Qualifications
  • BS/MS in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • 10+ years of broad electrical engineering experience, ideally in capital equipment or high-precision systems.
  • Strong expertise in analog, digital, and power electronics, including grounding, noise mitigation, and signal integrity.
  • Experience integrating motors, sensors, power systems, and mixed-signal components into complex platforms.
  • Skilled with PCB design and simulation tools (Altium, OrCAD, SPICE, MATLAB, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of embedded systems, microcontrollers, or FPGAs.
  • Hands-on experience with servo/stepper motors and motion control preferred.
  • Proven technical leadership, team mentoring, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Excellent communication and documentation abilities.
  • Ability to travel for manufacturing support, system bring-up, or customer interactions.
