What is embedded testing?

Embedded testing is the process of verifying and validating the software and hardware components of embedded systems. These systems are specialized computing units designed to perform dedicated functions within larger electronic devices, such as cars, medical equipment, or home appliances. Embedded testing ensures that both the software and hardware work together reliably, safely, and efficiently under various operating conditions. The testing process often includes unit testing, integration testing, system testing, and sometimes hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing. This helps identify defects early and ensures the embedded system meets its required specifications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded testing engineer?

To thrive as an Embedded Testing Engineer, you need a solid background in embedded systems, programming languages like C/C++, and experience with test methodologies, often supported by an engineering degree. Familiarity with tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, JTAG debuggers, and test automation frameworks, as well as certifications like ISTQB, are commonly required. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with development teams and identify complex issues. These skills ensure the reliability, safety, and performance of embedded products in critical applications.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in embedded testing, and how can they be addressed?

Embedded Testing professionals often encounter challenges such as limited hardware resources, integration with diverse hardware platforms, and ensuring real-time performance. To address these, testers typically use specialized tools for hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing and employ automation frameworks to manage repetitive test cases efficiently. Close collaboration with firmware and hardware engineers is also crucial to quickly diagnose issues and align testing strategies with development cycles, ensuring robust and reliable embedded systems.

What is the difference between Embedded Testing vs Embedded Software Developer?

AspectEmbedded Testing
Primary FocusVerifying and validating embedded systems and hardware integration
Skills RequiredTesting methodologies, debugging, knowledge of embedded hardware and software
Work EnvironmentTesting labs, hardware-in-the-loop setups, embedded device environments
CertificationsEmbedded testing certifications, ISTQB, hardware testing credentials

Embedded Testing primarily focuses on verifying the functionality and reliability of embedded systems through testing and validation processes. In contrast, Embedded Software Developers design, develop, and implement embedded software. While both roles require knowledge of embedded systems, testers concentrate on quality assurance, whereas developers focus on creating the software itself.

What does an embedded testing do?

An embedded tester evaluates the hardware and software of embedded systems, such as microcontrollers and firmware, to ensure they function correctly within their intended environment. They develop and execute test plans, use testing tools like oscilloscopes and debuggers, and verify system performance and reliability before deployment.

Job description

Do you like Robots? So do we. Do you want to make a positive impact on the world? We do that too!

REV Robotics is one of the fastest-growing companies in educational robotics. Our people and their passion for STEM education (FIRST Robotics, in particular) set us apart. We have a relaxed and friendly office located in Carrollton, TX, just outside of Dallas, and are looking for people who are willing to stretch their abilities to make STEM education materials more accessible and impactful to everyone.

About the role

This new role at REV Robotics sits at the intersection of software and hardware: in addition to building the fixtures themselves, you will work directly on the embedded devices under test, so hands-on embedded systems experience is essential. The successful candidate will work with the software and hardware teams to design and build test fixtures and the software that drives them, using single board computers to exercise, measure, and validate our robotics products. You will also own and improve the build systems that our C, C++, and Java projects depend on.

Pay Range: $98,000 - $115,000 per year

What youll do

  • Design and build test fixtures for robotics hardware, including the software needed to run them
  • Develop fixture control software on single board computers (e.g. Raspberry Pi) running Linux, interfacing with devices under test over GPIO, USB, serial, CAN, and similar interfaces
  • Develop and modify embedded software on the devices under test to support testability, instrumentation, and debugging
  • Create, maintain, and improve build systems (CMake, Gradle, etc.) for projects across the team
  • Automate build, test, and release workflows so hardware and software can be validated quickly and repeatably
  • Collaborate with the hardware, product development, and QA teams to define test coverage and requirements through the product life cycle
  • Analyze test results and fixture data to identify failures and drive improvements
  • Participate in code reviews

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering or Computer Science or equivalent experience
  • Proficiency with build systems such as CMake and Gradle, and experience configuring them for Java, C, and C++ projects
  • Experience developing on and for Linux
  • Hands-on experience with single board computers such as Raspberry Pi
  • Experience developing embedded software, including working with embedded devices both Linux and bare metal
  • Programming experience in C/C++, Java, and Python
  • Proficiency with Git version control and collaborative development practices
  • Must have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Work with a flexible schedule and demonstrate effective time management
Nice to haves
  • Knowledge and understanding of the CAN bus interface
  • Experience with basic UI/UX development
  • Experience with STMicroelectronics
  • Experience with FIRST Robotics

What we offer

  • Benefits, including medical, dental, vision, 401(k) matching and others.
  • Small, friendly office.
  • Fully stocked break room with snacks and beverages.
  • Casual office attire.
  • Nine paid holidays plus a floating holiday of 8 hours.
  • PTO that starts accruing from day one of employment.

It is the policy of REV Robotics to provide equal employment opportunity to all persons regardless of age, color, national origin, physical or mental disability, race, religion, creed, gender, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and/or expression, FIRST team affiliation, genetic information, marital status, status with regard to public assistance, opinion on bumpers on FRC robots, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state, or local law. In addition, REV Robotics will provide reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities.
