How much do embedded systems internships jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 7, 2026, the average yearly pay for embedded systems internships in the United States is $137,274.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $111,500.00 and $163,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What kinds of projects do Embedded Systems Interns typically work on during their internship?

Embedded Systems Interns often work on hands-on projects such as developing firmware for microcontrollers, testing and debugging hardware interfaces, or assisting with the integration of sensors and communication modules. These projects usually involve collaborating closely with senior engineers, learning to use tools like oscilloscopes and logic analyzers, and participating in code reviews. Interns may also contribute to documentation and help troubleshoot issues as part of multidisciplinary teams, gaining exposure to both hardware and software development practices.

What are Embedded Systems Internships?

Embedded Systems Internships are short-term positions for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience working with embedded systems, which are specialized computing systems designed to perform dedicated functions within larger devices. These internships typically involve tasks like programming microcontrollers, developing firmware, testing hardware-software integration, and troubleshooting embedded devices. Interns work under the guidance of experienced engineers, helping them bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world engineering challenges. Such internships are valuable for building technical skills, networking, and improving job prospects in fields like robotics, IoT, automotive, and consumer electronics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Embedded Systems Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded Systems Intern, you need a fundamental understanding of electronics, C/C++ programming, and microcontroller architectures, often demonstrated through coursework or project experience. Familiarity with tools like oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, hardware debuggers, and version control systems (e.g., Git) is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help interns excel in collaborative and fast-paced environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for successfully developing, debugging, and integrating embedded solutions while contributing meaningfully to engineering teams.
